Mark, there should be some old Mercury speedometer's and tachometer's still around. Mine are Mercury Quicksilver square faced, tach to 6,000 RPM, speed to 60 MPH I believe. I installed them in 1971 when I purchased the boat. Try e-bay, Joe Poole, places that sell old Mercury used parts, boat grave yards. Here is my dash.

They look great on your dash, put em in the perfect place too. My engine controls have a plug in the back end... that's for the tach, right? Assuming it will have to be rewired to use on the older gauges? I'll do some searching, thanks.

Middle section paint touched up, buffed and waxed. With all the cracks and crevices, took alot of time. Used a toothbrush to get the hard to reach places. The lower unit was sent to the paint shop to be painted, the same paint shop that repainted the cowl on the 1974 Merc.

Lower unit back from the painter - three coats of paint. Paint may look nicer on the lower unit than on the rest of the motor. Too nice to use in the water and chance hitting something. LOL. Next step is to install lower unit, attach controls and battary and start on the motor stand.

Better than new! I sincerely hope it runs a well as it looks. I suppose if it doesn't you could always move it into the family room as a conversation piece. Looks superb.
Can I send you mine? lol

I agree, bet it didn't look that good from the factory! Very nice David, I'd have second thoughts about submerging anything that pretty as well. LOL Between that lower and one of your super shiney props, you're going to blind a bunch of fish.

Installed the lower unit Saturday with the help of my wife. Everything had to line up - drive shaft splines, gear drive splines, and water tube. Ended up turning the flywheel to get the drive shaft splines to match. This ends the exterior work. Now to hook it up and get it started. Owner advertised motor as low hours, meticulously cared for, but we shall see. 1988 Merc would go on Glastron next year at the earliest. Switched tops, cowl, and face panel from the 1974 and they all fit. Scratched the 1974 cowl and had to touch it up. Life is not perfect.

1988 Mercury 115 HP disguised as a 1974. Understand midsection can also be changed. I put electical tape over the silver, chrome, and red markings on the mid and lower section.
