Forum behavior
« on: July 26, 2011, 03:01:49 PM »
Why is it that images uploaded to the forum can't be seen when not logged in to the forum? I tried to show (link) a couple to friends but the images were invisible to them (as non-members). I remember seeing the same no-pix problem before my registration went through.

I know some forums are like that,  but I see all the pictures from peoples computers at work and none are logged in.
Even behind a GE & CP firewall.
Which browser are they using ?

I don't mean not seeing a picture from someone not logged into the forum, I mean someone not registered/logged not able to see the pictures when I send them the link. Some aren't an issue because they're hosted elsewhere instead of on CGOAMN forum.

I've seen this too. Sometimes I'll just pop in without logging in and look at some thread that is talking about some pics, but I dont see them until I log in. My guess is that it is how the pictures are posted (or hosted elsewhere) and maybe a privacy setting?

Can you post a link to one of the threads that this is happening in?

I just tried one thread of hosted pictures and they show up when i log out.

I'll look at the settings.

I was just looking at the permissions. It was set so Guests can not see attachments which would include pictures that were uploaded to this site and not linked via another site like photobucket. I changed the permission so now guests can view these attachments.

Try it again and let me know if it's fixed.

I had another friend try http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=2417.msg26622#msg26622 and he could see the "goose" now. Another a couple nights ago couldn't.
Thanks

Thanks Jason, I've had that issue with my IPAD as I'm never logged in when using it.

As advised from the computer experts in the group I have removed the permission I allowed for guests to see the attached pictures. I guess if you are a guest and want to see all the pics we will be happy to sign you up.

FYI. You should still be able to see all "hosted" images linked through photobucket and other sites.

So...Ok, a little background.  I'm not sure if anyone pays attention to this or not...but I check once in a while.

The site is currently getting bombarded with Spammers, the last 3 mos. have seen a real increase over what it used to be.

The admins on the site can view what guests are doing on the site.  I've been watching a bit to see what's what.  Some are legitimate, like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. indexing our site for keywords & topics to bolster & steer appropriate search results to the site.  (That's all good.)

We, of course, have the normal guests that have a legitimate interest in the site.

And...we have special 'guests' from all over the world, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia that are also trolling through the site.  Recently I monitored a 'guest' from Sub-Saharan Africa printing topics...that concerns me a bit.

In the interest of protecting everyone, my recommendation was to keep the uploaded photo's for guests unviewable.  Hosted photos (Photobucket & Picasa, etc) will continue to be viewable as the site doesn't control that info.

I use hosted photos b/c they don't take up site space and I understand the risks, but I'm not sure all members really do, so my thought was to err on the side of caution.

As Jason said...we will happily sign up any guest who wants to enjoy all the site has to offer.

Here is another thing...  I still can't figure out how to upgrade the forum from 1.1.11 to 1.1.14.  SMF says that there are security fixes in the new patch, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it...  I also can't figure out how to connect with anyone from SMF that can help me.

Frustrating.
