WHAT TO DO??
« on: February 07, 2012, 09:18:48 AM »
Guys if you remember I went to Phoenix a couple of months ago and brought home a 1984 CV23. Soon to be christened HOT KNOTS.  She is all original and I am planning on trying to keep her as close to original as I can.  My shoulder replacement is healing nicely and soooo now it is time to think about fixing up some of the small things that need to be done to her.  Right now my main concern is the windshield which is the upright version and I plan to keep it, but it is crazed.  I don't think it is beyond saving by any means.  Any suggestions on what methods to use to save this windshield????

I have the same thing on my windshield ...
Don't think buffing would help, look's like they go all the way through.
Used Buckeye 2000 ( like Protect303 or Armor All ) 3 times. It helped but not enough ...
Your windshield shape/ style looks pretty easy to replace.

Hope some one has a better answer ....

Maybe you could buffet with noveous #3 then go to #2 (sorry if i missed spelled it) it helps with crazing and fine scratches thats what i used on my goldwing and it saved my windsheild from me buying a new one. Just my 2cents

VW.  Thanks for posting that article.  It seems that something like that is just what I am looking for.  The boat is in storage and if I can get the windshield off of it, then I can probably have it completed by spring and ready to place back on the boat when it comes out of storage.
Thanks again,
Barb

I have the port half of the forward leaning windshield if you want to reproduce it.  It is in 3 pieces but would make a good pattern and would be easy to ship!!  ;D
.. it is what it is ... and that is how it should be!

Thanks for the offer Chris but I actually prefer the style that is on it.  I think OleRed said he might have the pieces for the forward windscreen over at his place.  I know that I can get it replaced but I really want to save this one, and would rather spend those funds for other things for the boat.  Sometimes not having the wind in your face on cool days is advantageous. Either the seats are low or I'm too short, but I have to look through the windshield to see out front.

I couldn't get mine out either and ended up replacing the windshield as I had to look through it too. The "grazing" in mine looked like a buch of tiny cracks within the plexi.

I'd wash the w/s with soap & warm water, let dry, then saturate with 303. Both sides, repeatedly.

Novus is good stuff, just used some of it on the Baja w/s. Din't need #3 but took a good long #2 followed by a #1 ...

yea, the light needs to be right to see them. Mine was still smooth to the touch. I didn't try much more than cleaning the glass and a little bit of rubbing with different wax and compounds I had at home. On mine, when you look at them closely you could see the cracks INSIDE the glass. Maybe you have something different.

I have the same problem on the side windscreens on the starflite. Just on the exposed edge of the plexiglass and only about a half inch in.

Google what is crazing of plexiglass

Does not appear there is much you can do to remove it other than replace your windscreen.

Mainly caused from UV rays taking its toll on your windscreen.

Nonsense!

Humor me. Before ya replace it try soaking with some 303. I've seen that stuff eliminate some 'crazingness'.

Wind shields/screens are for wussies anyway ...

Doug

Wish I would have know about 303 before I replaced my interior on my 25yr old boat.  That was all sun faded ,dry rotted , and cracked up as I could have put several coats of on and it would of looked like new and I would still have my original interior. Would have saved me a lot of money so I could have replaced my crazed up windscreen. But then again I could have used it on windscreen to.

Barb

Gregg and I are looking for a summer project we will buff and wax out your beautiful 23 and I just ordered a bottle of 303 and we could try to take care of your windshield.  Your shoulder is not quite ready for that work out.  You could bring it up say around the middle of May and come back and get it in the middle of Sept. should be enough time to get done, don't you think Gregg.

What is 303?  And if it's that good can you get it in 304? Can't leave it with you Jeff, OleRed has some tweaking to do to it come spring, maybe one or two more HPs, but you will probably get a chance to see it in June in Iowa at that meet.  Bring your buffing box.

I put 3 heavy coats of Buckeye 2000 on my windshield, hoping it would sink into small cracks and help ...
It did a little but not enough ...
My windshield has a crack in it so will have to replace at some point any how.
