Motor Cover
« Reply #240 on: April 21, 2012, 03:55:37 PM »
Thanks Gregg. Finally got tired of waiting for JR to start on the motor cover so I went'n repo'd it today. Figger if I prep it it might give him a lil incentive to get off his butt'n paint it. Started sanding & the sky opened up. Sigh ...  Oh well the good news is our frantically predicted "Storm Of The Century" has so far proven to be a *Censored* in the wind. So boating tomorrow's not out of the question.

Ordered a new gasket, wouldya believe the old one was stapled on? It wasn't in terrible shape but it wouldn't be right w/new paint?

Aren't all the older OMC cowl gaskets stapled on?

From what I've recently learned yes. Called a couple buddies'n they both said uhuh. Reckon I never looked that closely before?

I have considerable experience with staplers. But can only imagine what that tool looks like. Not to mention what it costs. Gotta be purty bad azz to staple rubber to fiberglass like yer desk stapler sticks pieces of paper together?

Those staples are kind of a pain in the butt to get out without damaging the fiberglass too, huh Doug!?  I put a new one on the cowl of the "new" 'Rude, but haven't fastened it down.  I figure if the seal flies off while the cowl is on, we've got bigger problems to worry about!  What (if anything) are you going to do to hold yours on?

Not quite sure if/how I'll fasten it Mark. Thinkin mebbe a thin bead of adhesive in the bottom of the cavity. Then set it on the driveway with some weight on top? I dunno ...

Managed to get a lil primer on after the 'storm of the century' abated. It's gonna take a few coats to tie up all the loose fibers but it'll be okay.

I replaced the cover gasket on the 88 SPL and I just used weather strip/trim glue to make it stick to the cover. Placed a small bead in the gasket groove, put the gasket on the cover, mounted the cover and forgot about it. Took the cover off a month later and it's stuck on there quite well.

Bellows adhesive might work well. I've only used it one time, for intended use, but it sure seemed to work well.

Super Whetherstrip Adhesive works great. It's what I use. You really only need it where the 2 ends come together/

Thanks fellers. Ya I figger a lil dab of goo here'n there'n a lil pressure as it cures oughta hold it in place? I like the "set it'n ferget it" idea btw.

Got some more sanding'n priming done. Was a lil overzealous in my sanding of one of the edges. Whoopsie! Oh what the heck, plannin to strip all the decomposing foam off'n the underside anyway. Make doing that repair a lil easier ...?

Just looking at these posts.  I guess that hole is the only place for air to enter.  I thought that was the place.
I'll go to Classic G to look more.  I'm sure you're busy with your projects.  I'm sitting by the window looking at a fresh snow.  It will get to single digits tonight. (Fremont, NE)  The trailer might be same as mine before I widened the frame.  Had to offset the rollers to keep from scratching the chines.  Pics on 1980 CVX 16.  I believe they made the metric only one year, then back to CVX in 82.  Don't know if another CVX or CV deck would fit. But the color wouldn't match.  Best is to see a Gelcoat man or paint with metallic since the top does not sit in the water.  I repaired my side with a computer paint match basecoat/clearcoat.  Can't see the perfect repair. (opaque)  If you have studied the Tom Brown  CV or CVX mods he extended the inside chines.  Don't know if that would cause cavitation on the turn.  As long as you have it broken down I would try to improve the pad by making those strakes wider.  The CVX pad was probably created by filling the mold from the CV 16.  Since the pad is tapered wouldn't it act as a brake since the pad is wedge shaped?  I like your Baha.  What did it take to get from 56 to 63 besides a jack plate?  Is the 83 140HP the one from this C-500 project?

Actually I believe that hole is sposed to let hot air out. The cooler air enters under the carbs from around this plate:

I seriously doubt a deck from a different model would fit. It'll be alotta work but I'm just gonna have to salvage what I got.

Thanks but I think I'm gonna leave the hull/strakes alone. It's purty straight so I ain't gonna mess with it.

Ya the Baja's a purty cool lil boat. Yes the 140 is the one off'n the C500. Speed increase came from working the bugs outa the motor (been sittin a long time) and running a reworked 13 3/4 x 24 SRX. No jack plate.

I reckon a pad might work as a 'brake' under decelleration but when yer riding on it I don't see how?
