Weight of a cv-23? Trailer issue's
« on: October 20, 2014, 09:45:31 PM »
Trying to find out the weight of my cv-23.. Any one know?        Put a new trailer under it two falls ago and it only has about 2000 miles on it and the tires are almost bald, that's to fast for me and must be out of alinement or something, and I'm trying to find out what might be the cause, all 4 tires are wearing about the same with one of the 4 still not to bad,but 3 are done with wear bars showing. Any ideas guys?

Do you have any pictures of the trailer and tires?  Tire pressures, weight distribution and alignment check are the first things I would look at.

The boat/trailer has been put away for the winter but I took the tires off to get them replaced for next year and here they are...

Wow I can't believe they wore out like that after 2 seasons.

The wear on the  edges of the top tires is typical with the rears on tandem from all the scrubbing when turning. Maybe it is the alignment but I almost wonder if it is the tires themselves. Seems like they wore too evenly to be an alignent issue so severe that the tires are shot after 2 seasons.

What did you have them inflated too? Are they trailer tires?

Good deals here too, although the savings may be offset by shipping charges?;

FWIW I agree that it appears to be a tire quality issue, the mostly even wear points to that conclusion.  How are the bushings in the spring mounts, etc..?

I talked to my local shop, who I've known for years and he also thinks the wear is to even to be a bad alinement problem, just to light and soft tires. So I'm going to get some harder heavier ones and see what happens.  They are trailer tires with 50 lbs in them like the sidewall said.  I do live on a culdosak so every time we used it we had to turn it around a sharp circle to get in or out. And a lot of sharp turns at the boat launch.

Looks like the tires on my enclosed trailer I use for my hobby business. I've had the trailer about a year and a half (bought it new) and have about 5k miles on them. Trailer is usually around the 5-6k mark for weight. I really need to get them switched out before winter hits.

Mind sharing what brand those tires were?

edit: I'm pretty sure these are what's on my trailer now.

I put a set of new Trailer King's on my CV23 last fall. I've pulled it around quite a bit including a 10 hour round trip up north this year and have not had any issues yet. Filled to 50lbs. ST205/75R14

Here in FL those tires ain't worn out. They're just broken in ...

Looking at the pics they appear to have fairly equal wear. So I dunno if it's an alignment problem.

Sharp turns on cul de sacs, etc don't help. But I'd lean more toward it being a result of the old tires being stickier compound?

Well they certainly weren't undersized. You had more than 2K pounds extra carrying capacity.

I have Carlisle 4 ply c rated radial trailer tires on my trailer.  The boat and trailer weigh about 4500lbs   They're 3 years old and I've made a trip to the Iowa meet, 1000 miles round trip, 2 trips to the Minnesota meet, 1200 mikes each round trip and what ever boating I do in Indiana over the last 3 years and I still have over half of my tread left. If not over 3/4.

Good luck,

Terry
