Minnesota Title for 16' or less
« on: August 05, 2019, 01:08:15 PM »
So the Minnesota DNR boat registration website says "If your new boat (except kayaks or canoes) is longer than 16', your dealer will apply for title and registration (license) on your behalf, and is responsible for providing you with license materials."

I found my trailer title for the CVX-16 but the Boat Title was not with it.  Do others with CVX-16's have titles?  I think maybe It just has registration but not a separate title?

No titles required for 16' and less. Your DMV registration card should say if the boat is titled or not. If you don't have a title, when you go to sell it, you just sign that little card and give it to the buyer. Your trailer does not need a title either but ok if it does as it should have the permanent registration sticker.

Also, Boats manufactured prior to Aug 1 1979 do not require a title, but may have had a voluntary title issued. Like Jason mentioned the registration certificate would list whether or not a title was issued.

As I remember it the title law was enacted in 1989 and those of us who owned MN registered boats built between 1979 and 1989 had to apply for a MN title. If your CVX was registered at 16' and not the actual 16'8" you may have a boat that never had a MN title issued.

Here is a link to the current statute and at the bottom of this page is a link to the original 1989 version of the law.

On my registration , in a little block of ID numbers, it has a "TID" number.   I am assuming this is a Title ID Number, and makes me think it has a title issued. Anyone know what else a TID number could be?

On top of my reg. sticker, that came with reg. year stickers, it has …

Reg# XXXXXX / Expires : Dec.31, 2021 / Lienholders : 0 / Titled : NO

Below has the "TID" number in a box with MNDNR info and numbers.

If you think your boat has a title and you lost it you should be able to apply for a duplicate.

Well that is the answer.  No.  So that means I just provide a Bill of Sale to the buyer.. and the trailer title.

Your MN registration numbers are really close to each other.

Pretty sure mine are the original 1976 painted numbers, you can see cracks in paint and have an aged look to them.
I could be wrong .. I got the boat in 2011 ..

Since your '76 is 18 registrations behind Chad's '88, maybe your boat came to Minnesota in 88?  Also odd that you have different expiration years. Did someone register a boat on Dec 31?  Maybe a previous owner just let your registration lapse and got new numbers assigned.

Story I got on my boat was ..  A Dr. in Litchfield MN. owned it and kept it on a local lake. She (who I got it from) was a friend of the Dr. daughter and she had owned it for about six years.
I have a work order from Ed's Marine Repair in Darwin MN. from 2004, for a J. Johnson of Litchfield MN.
The woman I got it from was A.Toutges.
