BTW
The repairs to the cracks in the hull that Jim did, did not fail. there was no leaking there. I did grind part of them out and put another sheet of biax over the top just to be safe.

Was the crack on the "bottom" of the hull repaired ?
Don't know why all CV16's didn't come with a ski locker ..

We would?ve finished the floor yesterday, but we ran out of resin. Jeff had a partial gallon, Laurie ran down there this morning and picked it up and now the floor is done.

Well, the top is fitted, I didn?t exactly fall right on, but we got it. The front is screwed in hopefully tomorrow I?ll be able to lift the back up and glue the splash well to the transom.

The material I use to pour the stringer for this project and I used it on the stringer and transom on the GT150 is arjay 6011, I bought it from true Composits. The composite material I used for the transom, which is also what I used exclusively on the CV 16 V8, came from space-age technologies, they used to have a program where you could get seconds for $50 a sheet.

Hi there, glad to see the blue CV getting some love and attention! I am curious do you know where the cracks in the transom originated from/ how bad they were? I ask because last spring I picked up a Green CV 16 and transom seems to be okay but as with any older Glastron I am hyper aware/parinoid of cracks/searching for signs of failure. I dont know the history of my boat but I am assuming the transom is original. I basically inspect the boat for any signs of transom wear and cracks on the underside because from what Ive been told these CVs are prone to hull cracks. Fortunately it seems to be very solid as it doesn't take on any water the times that I've had it out!

Do you have any photos of where the transom failed so I can be on the lookout? Its a sharp looking boat, hope to see it out at the meet next year!

Hull cracks seem to only be on the 1976 CV16's.

Floor rot under splash well was because drain holes were a few inches above lowest point of hull bottom, water pooled then splashed up on bottom of unsealed wood floor.

Transom failed (both times) because of unsealed wood and old caulk failing.

Here you can see the repair that Jim and Dave did the edges of the glass weren?t pressed down very good but the repair did not fail. The crack was on one side he patched both, second picture you can see where I ground off the loose glass and then prepped it all I put two more layers of biax over the top of it before I put the floor in. When I replaced the transom, my assessment was that it was due to leaking around the splash Well drain, this was the second time it was replaced, I?ll bet Gregg has a pix from the first time.

Original transom was two sheets of 1/2 inch ply screwed together with four screws, then covered with a sheet of fiberglass.
The whole area under splash well was painted with a dark gray paint.

There wasn't any seal where the deck and hull came together at stern. Picture #1
Water got in between the hull and transom wood on the left side of the original transom and totally rotted wood.
I removed wood with my fingers in that area. You can see where stern flairs out in picture #2
The foam boxes where both dry.

Holes drilled and caulk used for speedo pick up and pilot tube had failed or replaced and not bedded right and let water in.
Water soak down and over to drain hole. Picture #3 & #4

Original motor was a Merc with old style mounts, dealer that mounted new motor just left old mounting bolts in holes and never sealed them ...
They were loose and rattling around ... Picture #5

Never .. Ever .. use wood in boat repairs ... LOL

@thedeuceman thanks for the details. You say the transom was leaking around the splashwell drain, was there a crack near the drain or something or how did you know thats where it failed? I am wondering where the transom failure or transom cracks originated from? Near splashwell drain or was it cracked in the transom corners, motor mounts etc? Just wondering how severe the failure was and where it originated from so I can be on the lookout for high stress areas! As in now I am going to go and re caulk my splashwell drain!

@Hyperacme interesting that the cracks only seem to be on 1976s. I did have some water drops leaking in the back transom area late this season and I thought it was leaking through the splashwell. After further hose testing it was leaking through the chrome trim piece that covers the deck/hull transom joint. So like you said, there isn't a seal back there on that joint so I put a layer of caulk over it and it sealed it all up. I also re sealed my spedo tube holes for good measure since I had the caulk out.

When the times comes that I need to redo the transom I will most definitely investigate an composite solution but hopefully thats down the road.

After thinking about it ...
After drilling holes for motor, stern U bolt thingys and splash well drain I mixed up some resin and with a small brush, coated inside of each hole with resin to seal wood.
Guessing that water got between fiberglass splash well and wood and soaked in.

Must have missed something on stringer also ..

Glad I went ahead and layered a seal of silicone over the chrome strip that connects the two. I couldn't get under the motor though so hopefully its not leaking under there! Time will tell I guess

Well, after sitting for over three months, finally made some progress, all it?s left to do is the port side rub rail, the rear trim in the insert. Then I can get the garage open to work on some much needed automotive repairs.
