Title: Tower of Power Repainted
Post by: David CVX-16 on October 21, 2010, 11:56:14 AM
Last year I used a harsh cleaner full strength on the cowl of the 115 HP Merc and exposed the aluminum colored metal on the ribbed cowl.

Had Brian, of Gold Star Auto Body & Frame in Lino Lakes, refinish the cowl and front faceplate. The standard Mercury paint was not that great per Brian(too much solvent and not enough pigment), so Brian had pictures taken to duplicate the paint color by his paint company and used two coats of paint and then clear coat. The decals were taped off.

He had previously done a perfect job fixing the side of the Toyota Celica. He has also worked on Prince's BMW's and Carl Polad's car. I would highly recommend him. He really cares about craftsmanship and takes the time to explain the whole process to you. His prices are surprisingly reasonable.   http://www.goldstar-autobody.com/

Beautiful David.
So how much did he actually reshoot? It has got to be tough to match existing paint. Its really an art.

Ross, only the cowl was repainted, not the motor. Brian (Goldstar Auto Body)  taped off the decals and silver lines on the cowl (they were in good condition) and sprayed the whole cowl and the black portion of the face plate. Brian called Allen at Supreme Motors and Allen was only aware of the spray cans of paint in Marathon Black. Brian's paint company did not have a paint code for Mercury black, so they took a photo paint analysis from the flat top section (cap) of the motor. Two coats of paint were used, and then clear coat. It looks great and I am sure Brian did it as a favor to me. The cost was $100 plus my tip to him.

The next project may be to restore the original canvas top of the boat - am in touch with the one who reupholstered the seats. Always another project, but that is not bad.

Looking forward to boating next year as only got out four times this year. The boat is saying "Use me or trade me."
