Title: Evinrude discontinued? Say it ain't so....
Post by: 185GXSF-Guy on May 28, 2020, 07:32:35 AM
I ran across this article in my news feed this AM : https://www.wired2fish.com/news/brp-discontinues-evinrude-mercury-to-support-boat-packages/

From the article :

"Our outboard engines business has been greatly impacted by COVID-19, obliging us to discontinue production of our outboard motors immediately. This business segment had already been facing some challenges and the impact from the current context has forced our hand," said José Boisjoli, President and CEO of BRP. "We will concentrate our efforts on new and innovative technologies and on the development of our boat companies, where we continue to see a lot of potential to transform the on-water experience for consumers," he added.

Sounds like no more Evinrude outboard motors

 :'( :'( :'(

I was reading about it as well. They are focusing on boat building and going to use Mercury for the outboards. I hate reading about companies like this.

The end of the two stroke O/B ..
Can't be good for Evinrude dealers.

Hopefully they had multiple different brands and not just a single brand. A friend that I worked with years ago saw this sort of thing coming in the Vacuum industry and he was quick to start bringing in other brands to his store, only thing that kept him from going under.

Seems like you are down to two choices for outboard engines - Yamaha or Mercury.  Kinda like I/Os - Volvo Penta or Mercruiser.

I can't recall the last time I saw an OEM put a Honda motor on a boat, but they are still out there.  Typically Mercury or Yamaha.  In fact, for current model year Glastron bowriders the choice is Yamaha or Mercury.

Very interesting.  Not sure that I saw a trim mechanism or any way to get the prop out of the water...hmmm....

Pontoon's are a huge market now ..

Guy on FB posted this ..

Brp is starting up a different motor line. The ghost motor. What I have seen it will hold the Evinrude name. They will not sell the Etec technology used in their Ski-Doo and Sea Doo lineup also. This is a corporate move not team Evinrude

How do they plan on keeping water out of it? I skimmed the article so it may have been mentioned in it. I have seen a lot of pontoons over time get water in the rooms and they sit lower in the water then when new.
