Hey everyone,
my 1980 Scimitar shifts hard when going from speed to idol is this normal ? Does the same for reverse too.
When sitting not running shifts easy and smooth .
Shifts fine just seams way to hard when running at the lake. .

Sounds to me like the shift interrupter switch is not working. The switch is designed to kill the motor for a brief second when coming out of gear to relieve the load.

I would agree with Jeff given the symptoms. Shifts fine when not running eliminates linkages or controls. Shifts hard when under power really points to the shift interrupt. Alpha drive "dogs" don't like to uncouple when under power. Try turning the ignition off as you transition to neutral. Just a brief cut, not enough to require a restart. It's either bad, mis wired, or not aligned correctly.

As others have stated your problem most likely is the shift cutout switch.Here are the directions (right from the Mercruser Manual) for adjusting the shift cables and the shift cutout switch. I've included a clearer picture of the switch on the shift plate. Hope this helps.

Ok Ive adjusted the cables per the manual , And put a test light on the coil with the key on. shift it into forward and the light interrupts but when going into reverse it does not.
the switch plate does not seam to travel correct in reverse .
I'll keep working on it .
Found a leak in the reverse lock valve . I believe that's what its called. have to look for rebuild instructions .

To get my cutoutt switch to work properly I had to bend the arm slightly to get the switch to engage.

Thanks for sending the pics John. I spent the day yesterday adjusting my cables and the shift interupt. What a PIA.. my reverses lock out peed fluid the entire time I was adusting the cables.. I did take it apart the other day and saw t
My worn out Seal.. 1 of them at least. Once I got it out and the Retaining bolt out I could not separate it any further.. I am talking about the part where you would have to keep an eye out for loosing the bearings. I need to separate that so I can get to the 2nd seal.
I got on this morning hoping for assistance and there it is.. You guys are awesome

Put some new o-rings in the reverse lock out valve today easy job.

Thanks for the Pics Luv2win, that is exactly what I need to do... where did you get the new O rings? I need to get them asap. You have part # or anything. Have been working on the CVX for about 2 years now. Tons of Hours like everyone else on the Forum, and loving it. This week was my 1 st launch. Got everything the way I was hoping for but the leaking reverse lockout and final cable adjustment. Still tough going from forward to Nuetral but reverse to nuetral works nicely. Almost there..

Any local hydraulic store or possibly a farm implement dealer should be able to match them up once you have them removed from the valve.

Yes, you can find them any where just match them up . I changed both of them.
No more leak and I have the Shifter working perfect.
Cables are adjusted correctly and the Ing Interrupt switch is adjusted and working great.
A trick for the Interrupt switch ,
Adjust your cables first. the Interrupt switch last.
Take a test light clip it on the ground side of the battery then touch the point on the Neg side of the coil the light will be on with the key on.
then have someone shift it slow to forward and see if the light goes out and back on. same for reverse works great .
I just bent the lever arm until I got it working correct in forward and reverse .
Had a great day at the lake ran it pretty hard and no issues this time out. ;D. And forgot to have my wife take some video lol.

Thanks for the update, glad to hear you got it all sorted out. Always a great feeling when you solve an issue like this and realize not only did you learn something new, but also saved a fair amount of time/money not taking it to a shop.

The arm that actuates the switch on mine doesn't seem to move enough to trigger the switch. Ideas? I may try and reseal my reverse lockout switch too at this time.
