Title: removal of Volvo Penta outdrive and transom assembly
Post by: wexrocks on February 20, 2011, 05:59:47 PM
Having never played with these Volvo drives, I figured I'd just ask and save myself some time and headaches. Of course, like anyone, I could keep taking bolts out till it all falls apart  ;D but, I'd like to get it out as quickly as possible, and as intact as possible, in case anyone needs one of these maybe I can help them out (I'm going Mercruiser).

Thanks for any advice!

Pull out the large stud that connects the steering helmet to the top of the drive and flip the helmet up out of the way. Disconnect the drive bellows, exhaust bellows, shift cable and water transfer hose. Remove the two pivot pin retaining screws and use them to pull out the two tilt pivot pins and the drive should pull away from the transom. Revealed should be 6 bolts arranged around the drive shaft housing, remove them and you can pull the engine out from inside the boat with the bell housing and drive shaft attached.

Thanks for the info! Should help it go much quicker. I've always worked on outboards and Mercruisers, so it'll be a learning experience. I'll post the outdrive then in case anyone needs a spare or parts. Thanks again!

Which boat has a Volvo drive? If you want, send me a picture of the drive/transom and I'll notate it for you.

Rich, the Volvo drive is on the Scimitar, it's the original equipment. I'm going big block and Mercruiser Bravo One. I did just notice today that the motor spins standard left hand, but the prop spins opposite of the Mercs, thought that was interesting. no idea what kind of power this Volvo drive could take, but I had enough of no trim and reverse locking mechanisms when I played with older outboards!  ;) I know the Bravo will take what I intend to throw at it, and parts are common. plus, I have a much better understanding of them. thanks for the offer of diagram assistance, I'll be sure to let you know if I need it. as long as the bolts don't fight me too hard, should be able to get this out of my way quickly.  ;D

Volvo drives can be set up with right-hand or left-hand props just by changing the shift link on the drive where the cable connects, so they can run in either direction. You can't do that with Merc (Alpha) outdrives and they would have to be ordered special for counter-rotation in twin applications. But, going the Mercruiser Bravo route is the way to go. Not only do you get the benefit of tilt and trim but you also get the selection of performance props available to fine-tune your boat. The biggest problem you'll have is rebuilding the transom for the Bravo transom assembly, the Volvo cut-out is larger than that for the Mercruiser so you'd have to close up the hole and cut anew.

Rich,
yeah, it's getting a new transom anyway, so I'm not worried about that. I may even go up a little with the X (nothing crazy) while I'm at it. that's an interesting fact about the Volvo drives. the Bravo's are the same way, for reverse rotation in twin applications you just reverse the shift linkage so one is in reverse and use the correct prop. but yes, the Bravo will certainly open up alot of possibilities for props and performance/replacement parts. and will definately take a beating. I have a feeling when this thing is done, I will be puting the hammer down pretty often.  ;D
