1988 115 merc lower unit, nothing but metal shavings

As I am sure some of you suspected, the LU was filled with small metal shavings.  Everything else on the machine indicates that it was well maintained, and so I'd like to explore having someone with the tools and experience rebuild this LU instead of buying a rebuilt off the shelf.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Boat Motor Recyclers did mine. They're good and can use used parts if they have them.

Jerry, that was a great suggestion, got the unit back "rebuilt and ready to run", in less than 1 week from drop off to pickup.

out of curiosity, and for future reference, what did it cost to have that LU rebuilt?

750.  he was able to use some parts over so did not sell me more than it really needed.  That also includes a new water pump, since its out in the open it makes sense.
