Gelcoat pigment
« on: May 22, 2011, 05:42:11 PM »
I'm sure I'm at least months away from needing this (if not a year), but what's the best place to find matching gelcoat pigment (or precolored gel) to match my '64 Skiflite? I realize what's on there has faded over the years, so it wouldn't match exactly. Also, Unless I put a thin coat over all the upper hull, I'd only need a tiny bit. Is the Gelcoat a different kind of resin or the same as the rest with pigment added?

Or would I be better off filling in some chips with plain uncolored resin and painting over it with automotive paint?

You can get a gel-coat repair kit with pigments to color with.  If you need a gallon Express Composits can color match.

Express will also match in Qt cans approx.  $35 for a qt.

It is not custom color as you have to pick it off a swatch ,but they will also sell you little syringe of other colors to mix with  to get the color you need.

Went through the process this spring.

Matching gel coat can get tricky specially with faded out color.

Perfect time for someone to bring this up. The V172 I bought last year has couple patched areas that need pigment. I have never done any fiberglass or gelcoat work. Is there a way I can apply gelcoat without a spray gun? Otherwise I can take it someone and have them spray it like WBBW.

You can brush it on. sand it and buff it, just like new.

A fellow boater freind (Non-Glastron) lent me several videos this weekend on gelcoat repair.  I watched vol 1 this afternoon and just started vol. 2.  If you're goig to gelcoat, I'd suggest taking the time to mix a custom color to match.

After watching the first one, I am not afraid to do repairs myself.  My friend has a tint kit and assures me that we can get a close enough match that the naked eye can't find the repair.

I'll have pics realtime as usual.  If anyone wants to watch in person, thats cool.

be careful when tinting a little goes a long way. one little speck of color can turn it into something you don't want.
