Sandblasting and Powder Coating
« on: June 12, 2010, 03:58:59 PM »
I used the Company's vendors for both sandblasting and powder coating three outboard motor gas tanks, so I know the quality of work they produce. Both are located in Lino Lakes, around 35W and Lake Drive. Please call them to discuss your project and other details.

Hey David
Did they do anything to the inside of the tanks?

The fittings were taken off the gas tanks. Before sandblasting and powdercoating, all openings were sealed with masking tape so that the inside of the gas tank kept clean from sand and paint.

If the inside of the gas tank is rusty, you may want to throw the tank away. Sandblasting and powercoating is for the exterior surface.

I thought Rosscoe's question might have been aimed at a presence of gas fumes, considering the powder coat process involves heat

Very good point but I was wondering if they treated the inside at all (cleaned it up. I contacted one place and it was sounding like 200.00 to do a tank inside and out. I have a 12 gal tank that fits nicely under the splash well of the 61 I'd like to keep.

Ross, I am thinking that the inside of a gas tank should be cleaned up with some industrial cleaner. If it is rusty or needs sandblasting, the tank may not be good. Sandblasting roughs up the surface and that would not be good for the inside of a gas tank. If you want me to get a sandblasting and/or powdercoating quote, bring the tank over and I will bring it to work.

I'll consider that. I havent really taken the time to examine it inside, or at all for that matter. Its pretty low on my list but on "the list" just the same.

If anyone needs the inside of a tank redone there is a place in Eden Prairie called Tank Renew I have had them do old gas tanks for motorcycles the do a great job.
I think this has become an addiction.
