CV23 trailer overhaul
« on: June 08, 2018, 09:44:31 PM »
Decided to make a new thread to show my trailer overhaul.
Trailer had its share of surface rust, two mangled fenders, rotten wood, old wiring, worn out jack stand, bad lights, and a winch missing a handle. Last year I replaced the winch with a 2-speed Fulton F2 winch. Also replaced tail lights at that time too.
First step was unloading the boat with a pair of floor jacks, wood blocks, large 12 ton jack stands, and rubber mats.

Then i tore the trailer down to basic frame.

I sanded down the entire trailer and used Rustoleum Rust Reformer on the rusty spots.

After all the rust was treated I put all the metal parts back on with SS hardware.

Trailer was pretty much ready for paint at this point but I did cut all the plywood. One part I did differently here was make the 3 piece of wood behind and in between the fender one piece to give it more strength. Trailer bunks were fine so old wood was reused here. All new SS hardware again.

For painting I ended moving in the garage and lifted it 3 to make it easier to work on using my engine hoists.

Paint was Rustoleum Stops Rust (Ill get the color later, was a perfect match) thinned with acetone and then added hardener. Two quarts was just enough. First time using a paint gun for me. Its not perfect but Im happy with it.

I got the carpet from Wholesale marine. Nice color and nice and dense but am not super happy with it. Seems to Frey easily. Well see how it holds up

Jack stand required a few mods to the trailer to fit. Mostly needed a short piece of angle under north to utilize the 3 bolt holes.

Then it was just installing new wires and accessories.

Boat goes back on tomorrow!

Very well done, you are a true Craftsman.  Impressive work. Should provide years of service and certainly one less item to worry about when out for a day in the sun.  You'll be the envy at the ramp.

looks way better than factory, very nice.  Did you convert to led lighting?  How much time and money would you say you have in your project?

Yea, they are LED lights. Hard to put a total time. Maybe 20 hours... I was able to work on it in-between chasing the boys around so 20 min here and there! Just need to find a pair of the glastron stickers for the sides now.

Good work Jason, it gives me ideas on how to do one of my Glastron trailers. You have straight sided channel and mine looks to be extruded or at least having a pair of grooves at the top and bottom of the channel. Going to have to find or fab some of that channel as I have a section missing.

John, Yours must be aluminum. My trailer was steel and was just C channel. Made it really easy to run the wiring!
