Hey!! New member here!
« on: September 30, 2019, 08:54:33 PM »
What's up everyone! Just joined this page after buying my first classic boat, a 77 CVX-20! Got some work to do. Has a 429 with an issue, so needs to get pulled and torn down. Paint from the rub rail up was repainted over 20 years ago, but I may hold out for now. Looking forward to connecting, sharing, and meeting like minded people.

Four thumbs up on your find! 8)

You may be a lucky man in the motor category. Someone replaced the 460 with a 429.

385 Series Engines get a lot of bad press. Mostly from Ford haters.

There are lots of improvements that don't cost any more than the stock stuff you may be replacing. So do your research

Don't let anybody talk you into high hp. These Are Torque Monsters - and you can make 500 hp without sacrificing torque.
Gotta have torque in a boat.

Looks like you're good in the intake and carb dept. (Can't see inside the carb though  ;)) Don't know if you have space but these motors respond to a carb spacer pretty well - Cheap mod.

Find out what year it is. Early 429s are leftovers from the Horsepower wars. They have awesome heads for Cast Iron stock.
IF the heads are stock.
They were under-rated in HP by Ford and made an actual 450 HP stock.
They were called Super Cobra Jets - Tbirds.  In Cop cars, they had a different designation. Also early Lincoln Marks. up to and including some in 73s

Later years, they got smogged down and had lower compression.

Find the head numbers.
God forbid the block is toast, but if it is keep the heads.
If they are early heads, they flow almost as well as the Edelbrock heads.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-2045/overview/make/ford    Do some digging on Edelbrocks site.

Also - http://www.429-460.com/  They can help out when you find your Block/Head numbers.

Do a Pertronix or some kind of "Module" in the distributor. - May have already been done. Cheap mod.

OK so I'm jealous .....

Thanks so much "ford-bldr", for the welcome!!  The guy I bought the boat from said he loved the 429 over the 460. The shorter stroke motor pulled hard out of the gate from what he told me. This motor was dyno'd at 425hp. He put an MSD ignition with rev limiter kit also. One thing he said he didn't care for was the fact the engine builder shaved the heads, and he felt the intake didn't quite fit to his liking, but I'll look into it. I do have a box of material that he gave me, but haven't gone through it yet either.
The previous owner had this boat over 20 years, and coincidentally, has a place on the same lake as I do. So I've seen this boat out for cruises and have always drooled over it, now I own it. This was one of 3 he says that have been on the lake as far as he's ever known, and I know who has one other, but the 3rd hasn't been seen in years. I actually talked with the other owner about 2 months ago over a cup of coffee, staring at his boat, and his is mint, and has owed his over 30 years.  I cant wait to dig into this beauty!!!

CV-19, to be honest, I have no idea. The owner said he could hear some rattling in the back end of the boat and parked it. He wasn't sure where it was coming from, and sold it to me very honestly with that in mind. At this point, I'm not sure where to begin. I'll be moving it to my shop here shortly to tinker with it. In the meantime, I'm just gathering information and opinions from this group. I'm super pumped to own this boat and have all winter to get it water ready. Thanks for your reply as well!!

Welcome Aboard!

Nice CVX 20 you have. One of my favorite Carlsons.

Plenty of info on this forum to help with your project.
For example,Gregg (hyperacme) can hook you up with the manual for the jet drive.
Keep the progress reports and pictures coming.
