Prop test
« on: October 16, 2012, 08:51:17 PM »
Finally was able to test the Merc Diamond? prop I borrowed from Brandon while at the MN meet.  It's a 4 blade, 14.25inch, 18 pitch aluminum blade.  Had to remove the trim tab due to the rake of the blades.  Took a friend with me and off we went.  Prop has a good hole shot and bow lift.  I was able to keep the boat on plane at a slower speed.   I figured this prop would slow me down some, but 8 to 10 mph? and still had a lot of throttle left.  Maybe a 20 or 22 pitch would be more what I need in this prop?  Send me pm with your address so I can send your prop back to you Bradon.  And thank you very much for your patience with your prop.

Terry

Sounds like just what I'm looking for at about a 23 pitch.  Info?

Jerry, you need a surface prop that does not cavitate when the motor is raised off the transom. Consider a four blade Mercury Quicksilver Trophy Plus prop. They are used on Allison boats and are considered a good general purpose prop. They come in the smaller hub as your Merc 150 horse has, and come in all pitches, not just even pitches.

That's just what I want. Do you have a small-hub 23P in your bag of tricks?

I talked to Mercury, and to Power-Tech.  I think I'm going to order a Power-Tech TRO4 13 3/4 X 23p WITH 3/8" porting and Cushion-Lock hub. Any thoughts?

When you get a Power Tech for an outboard, you are taking a chance they will work. They may or they may not. I purchased a Power Tech PTR and a RAF three blade in 21" pitches and they did not work.

There is a reason the Trophy Plus prop is the most popular prop on high performance boats powered by Mercury.

What you should do is find someone who has one that will let you test it. Closest thing I have is a 22" Ballistic XL.

Do any of your local dealers have a loaner program? The dealer near me has about 30 props to fit my 115. I can take two at a time. Just have to fill out a form and leave a credit card number if you dont bring it back. I tested two different Rakers last weekend.

Fwiw Power Tech props never worked out quite right for me, and I tried at least a few. My Lightspeed aka Raker appears to be the cats ass for all around performance. If'n ya really wanna step up'n go fast yer gonna need a semi-surfacing prop a la OMC SRX. Or the Merc equivalent.

My 2.9 cents

Jerry, I am curious who (what department) did you talk to at Mercury? What did they recommend for your 150 Short? Were they aware of the modifications to the boat?

Power Tech got the lowest speed of all the props I tested.  (21P, 48 mph at 5300 rpm's)
Might work great on your setup ... won't know until ya try ...

Someone in my area has an SRX 23 pitch for $125. I may grab it and try it.

I called Merc racing, They told me they didn't work on old stuff, but he did say he was part of the crew at Lake X. He said Scott Riechow knew all about inline 6s so I talked to him about 1/2 hour. He said the Trophy+ or Laser, would be good, Then I called Power-Tech and talked to their specialist. The TRO4 is "just like the Trophy+" but he could custom build it with the Cushion-Lock hub which I liked the sound of, and 3/8" porting which would help with the motor up.  He just sounded like he understood what he was talking about. It isn't just an "out of the box" prop. but will be ordered and custom built. I'm trying to get a price through Boat Motor Recyclers, but they have to get a price from Power-Tech. It looks like around $450. Should know tomorrow.
