And so it begins.
« on: April 06, 2016, 08:46:29 PM »
I've been working on the 67 V164 and the 71 V175 jet so far this spring and after a visit from Kip and Jeff, I was "urged" to get after the 23 so today I moved 4 boats around and got the 23 in the shop. I started late in the day so I only got the swim deck and back seat out but did put a battery in to see what did and doesn't work before tearing into anything serious.
I start a job on Monday so its going to put a crimp in my time, like everyone else that works Lol.

I'll be working in a custom cabinet shop. Small company thats been in business since 92. I like small companies. 4-10 hour days or at least working towards that, and about a 50 minute drive. I am not looking forward to waking up at 4:00-4:30 am :(
Yeah there's that pesky money thing that also puts a crimp on boat work.
I hope to pull the leg today and get the motor mostly disconnected, if not pulled.

Awesome Ross! That boat was obviously taken car of. Usually the carpet back there in the corners and around the engine is always dirty and black from being wet. In the pictures your boat looks like it has been kept dry all its life.

Will be interesting to see what you find once you get the motor pulled. Just wonder if the leaking water is not because of the transom but an issue with the transom assembly. Could be an easy fix, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Interesting. Yea. That looks like brand new. The floor in the back of yours is different then mine too. Notice how the areas next to the engine are raised on mine? The back seat actually screws to the short vertical wall. I hate this step though. Makes it VERY difficult to get under the engine to do anything. Interesting how yours is totally flat. Either it's been modified or Glastron did it different on the newer ones.

Maybe the leak is bellows or something else. Did you put it in the water? Poke at the transom?

That is odd! Yea, its nice being flat. With the seat out and dividers, there is quite a bit of room. Were your sides carpeted back there too? Funny they would change something like that.

No, never put it in the water based on the PO telling me it was taking on water. The gel is definitely cracked on the outside, just below the drain hole.
I just noticed your trim pump and battery are reversed from mine as well. Goofy. The best thing I discovered in the last couple of days is the remote oil filter/relocator kit?. Right up on top behind the power steering pump.

So I got the out drive off and the motor yanked. I was hoping I might be able to get away with a partial transom replacement but Nooooo. Its mulch. About the bottom 2/3's I had a bad feeling when I saw the expanding foam.
I even found a mushroom in there! I hate mushrooms!
Sorry the pic is blurry. I ate the first one and it looked ok to me! J/K

The story on the damage.
The PO got ripped off and it was sold to him this way. He was not happy, which is why he was anxious to part with it.
Apparently, one time when he brought it into a shop (for leakage?) the mechanics recognized it and said they had replace the outdrive on it. That owner or the one before that, hit something destroying the OD. It was replaced with an SEI drive but the gel was never fixed. It leaked. I dont know who used it for how long that way. I know the guy I bought it from only had it out once or twice in the time he owned it, because it was taking on water.

So my questions moving forward, for those that have done this before. Obviously the steering cable has to come out. Looks like it may be easiest to disconnect it and slide the rod out as I remove the inter transom housing?
Can the rest of the steering linkage stay intact?
If so, then it appears what I need to do is unbolt the inter from the outer?
Will the exhaust stay with the inner transom plate?
Anything I am missing?
Also, how many gaskets am I looking at when I reassemble?

This is so rotten, I can move the tow hooks around by hand.

At least I discovered something I like. the oil filter has been relocated to the top of the motor so it should be easier to do an oil change, but might be messy.
Yea for something positive.

Ross, once you disconnect the steering cable and the lines from the pump the hydraulic ram should come out with the transom plate. The exhaust will have to be removed because it's hooked to the inside of the bell housing not the transom plate.

On the upside, I have a helper. A stray(?) cat that will be our mouser if I dont find his keeper. Friendly little guy wants to help all the time. never stops talking unless he's eating or sleeping.

Crap, I left that mushroom out there......

We're calling him Earl for now. He's using my roll around cart for a litter box because it had floor dry in it. Sorry, no pics of that. Oh well
