Looking at a CVZ18 what should I look for?
« on: March 30, 2022, 05:15:57 PM »
Hi - I have a CVX16SS and may go look at a CVZ18 Open Bow. What should I look for that's different than my 16? Thanks!

CVX18 closed bow
CVZ18 open bow

Any pictures of boat ?

Like any old glastron .. floor (under drivers seat on most), stringers/motor mounts & transom.
I think most have done all repairs without removing deck from hull.
Quite a few CVX and CVZ rebuild threads on this forum.

Friscoboater has some Youtube video's on CVX18 repairs

Same hull cvz-18 versus the cvx-18, though many cvz's came with a 305, whereas the CVX were mostly 350's.   The CVZ-18 has a belly fuel tank which is different than a CVX-16/18.    There should be two access plates, one for the sender, the other for the pickup.   Spend some time inspecting these areas for aluminum corrosion and fuel smells/leaks     if the floor is rotten, I'd recommend a poly tank replacement, so that's a cost to figure in.   Both are fantastic models, the z being a bit more family oriented.  Better storage, and an optional top exists to cover the bow(convertible).   If you like to beach your Glastron, you rarely get your feet wet, you just walk out the bow.    Funny really, I graduated from a 16SS to a Z cuz I had to have a V-8.

Personally I would stay clear of the OMC stringer, unless it?s a project and you can update it.

hough many cvz's came with a 305, whereas the CVX were mostly 350's.

The CVX18 was introduce in 1977 I believe & wasn't offered with anything bigger than a 302 Ford or 305 Chevy until the California Special came out in 1981. That was the first time you could get a 350 in a CVX18.

My first Carlson was a CVX16 OB and it was just too small for me. And i learned I'm not an OB guy. The difference in length isn't all the much between the two as the CVX16 is closer to 17'. It's the bigger beam on the 18 that makes the boat a lot more useable. The CVX18 is one of the few Carlsons you can actually get back into if you're out in the middle of the lake. Add a swiveling front passenger bucket seat, ski tow, V8 power & you've got yourself one of the best Carlson's for water sports.  That may or may not be important to you. I slalom ski 15' off w/mine & it throws a very manageable wake.

If what your looking at is a CVZ then you get extra seating/room plus easier access to the bow in addition to what the CVX offers. The fuel tank in the CVX is farther forward so the boat planes out nicer with less bow rise than the CVZ.

I personally think the CVZ-18 is a great idea with a few compromises.  However, if you want an open bow Glastron-Carlson I/O, its your only option.

I had mine 'skid' out on the pad towing the kids on tubes, then catch causing the boat to rock violently...scariest moment of my boating life...and I've been trapped on a reservoir with a tornado & hail.  The belly tank sloshes to the rear on take off making the bow wake tough to climb over at times as you're suddenly stern heavy.  I've had to move people to the bow to correct the imbalance.

I personally like the CVZ-19 better, more stable, balanced better, no pad...but again, if you want an I/O...the CVZ-18 is it...and its a fine boat, but not my favorite.

1979 Glastron Carlson CVZ 19 (Redmond)
https://bend.craigslist.org/boa/d/redmond-1979-glastron-carlson-cvz-19/7454502049.html

The boat is a 1979 Glastron Carlson cvz 19 bow rider. Open bow with an outboard mercury 115. We have had a lot of fun and attention out on the lake even with the downside of how the interior looks. Was going to do a full restoration but life happens and now I'm way to busy. Runs great but like I said it needs some work. Would be a great first boat or project. Make me an offer or possibly trade for other motorized things. Call or text at anytime

Make sure and let us know how this turns out, when you go to look at it make sure you poke around on the transom and the stringers around the motor mounts to make sure it?s not soft.

My 79 cvz-18 was as rotten as it gets, the helm seat pulled out of the floor with me in it the first time I tried to go on plane.     Not sure if the cvz-19 has the same type of fuel tank, maybe D can say.  If the floor is soft and the OB rocks on the transom, price it as needing restoration.
