Windsheild, small crack question
« on: June 22, 2015, 11:59:37 AM »
Folks,

The windshield on my gt140 has a very small (1") crack starting at one of the screw holes. A boating buddy suggested I drill a 1/32" hole at the top of the crack to create essentially a stress riser and limit movement. Good call or not? Suggestions?

Was on the river last night and saw a fella in a gold 70's glastron jet throwing a 50' rooster, told the wife the next boat will do that, looked like a heckuva lotta fun!

Drilling the hole generally will stop a crack before it finds another edge.  Gluing a thin plastic strip over the crack has also been used to repair a crack.

Thanks,

I'll try the drill first, in the event it migrates does anyone have a resource for new wind shield, materials or someone to fabricate. Would like to do it this winter.

Boy I dunno bout the drillin a hole gig. Is it safe? Ain't never heard of it. Sounds lil skeery to me.

Besides age the next main reason they crack is because of incorrect fastening/shock mounting. Too tight, too loose. Both will cause it

My Z windsheilds had two holes drilled in them, stopped the crack, but honestly, I don't know how long they had been there. Correct mounting is important as stated earlier.

Stop drilling a crack in plastic is the preferred method to stop the crack.  It relieves the stress in that area.  In school when I went for my A&P license that was talked about ion plastic windshields and is a manual 43.13 a method to stop cracks in both plastic and aluminum.

Yep, stop-drill is the right thing.  Use a Uni-bit - a regular drill bit could chip the plastic.
