Hi David
I’m in the same boat :)  I searched for a “drop-in” 5.7 for a 23 as well and had saw lead times from 6-10 weeks to purchase a crate or rebuilt.  I would have been looking at $2500 - $3200 by the time it was at my door.  I decided to tear down the current engine and have the bottom half rebuilt, which will be a much lower cost.

Boating season is too short to have engine trouble so I know the pain!

Summit racing states they have engines in stock, boasting free shipping as well.  Prices are around 2000-2500, considerably more for performance oriented engines.    Maybe consider a wrecking yard engine?

heck just go hit up your local chevrolet dealer. they should be able to get you a crate motor in a couple of days. I would go with one out the the GM performance parts book. The dealer should have access to it.

David,  I'd at least pull the top end off that engine in the off chance it is something easy.  At that point you can check some of the rotating assembly.

My Dad actually memtioned that too; I wonder what to look for though that would fit my application; being that this is an 87' the impeller is in the out drive; how have you all bypassed and use a engine water pump instead? What works best for all the mercruiser bolt on's?

That engine may work, but there are most cost effective options with iron heads.  You will need to check compatibility with what parts you plan to reuse.   Of critical importance would be the intake, for instance, the stock mercruiser intake does not bolt to Vortec heads.  I'm not familiar with the heads on that summit engine, so I can't say your Merc manifold woul fit.   Could upgrade intake as well?   All Merc alpha drives have a water pump impeller on them, I've never heard of bypassing one.   The engine still requires a water pump to circulate water in the block.

You can get a rebuilt long block from Michigan Motorz for $2500. Rebuilt to OEM mercury specs. They have a great reputation. Not sure about lead times.
