For better or worse I don’t know which, this appeared at the farm today.
I did not have to pay extra for the beehives

Congratulations on your new purchase. What's your plan?
-
For now just get the garbage cleaned out of it and assess the situation. I don’t mean assess what it needs because I can already see it needs everything. The assessment is going to be a guesstimate of how many sheets of plywood and gallons of resin it’s gonna take

Nice find! Just the right boat for you 2. If I lived close to a large waterway, I might sell my Intimidator and buy a boat like this one!
-
It went kinda like this. He got this boat cuz it was spose to have a good motor that he intended to put in a bayliner, it had no trailer so he bought this trailer for $600. He intended to pull the motor and scrap the boat but decided to ditch the whole plan and sell both boats. We decided no after looking but figured It would be ashamed to let it get trashed so I told him I would pull the motor for him if he delivered it to the farm. And he could keep the trailer, but then we figured it would be bad to have it laying on the ground so after some bickering we agreed on $500 for the trailer. We need to get the CV16 V8 done first, then I will start picking away at it. Bad part is on the trailer the top of the windshield is about 10’ 7” and both the shop and the shed have 10’ doors. So I guess the first thing to do is pull the windshield.

It looks big in the photos, probably bigger in person, a daunting project. Certainly has some nice features for river camping trips, and I assume it would replace the Bal Harbor? That is a tough call, maybe just prep for winter, finish the 16 v-8 and revisit in the spring. Didn't sound like you had a lot tied up in it yet, so it could wait. Any chance of just a quick cover up and drivetrain and splash it? Save the full-on resto for after you actually fall in love with it? My opinion might change if I saw it in person I suppose. I know I couldn't take it on, having trouble with all my projects as it is.

I guess the pictures of the new one looks similar, but it’s a 1990 Ventura 249

VERY cool boat / yacht !
What size boat is considered a yacht?
To be termed a yacht, as opposed to a boat, such a pleasure vessel is likely to be at least 33 feet (10 m) in length and may have been judged to have good aesthetic qualities. The Commercial Yacht Code classifies yachts 79 ft (24 m) and over as large.
I always thought it was the beam (11 feet or more) that made it a yacht .. guess not ..
I had a 25 ft. Four Winns that the cap. plate listed for persons and gear "Yacht" ?
-
Of course, This boat is barely vintage...only 30 years old! Lol

Quick estimate of boat full of water / fuel / trailer / etc. comes to about 8500 lbs.
Your trailer should have a rating for 8000 lbs.
1989 was first year Glastron brochures listed Genmar.
1990 listed Genmar / Texas
1993 listed Genmar / Little Falls MN.

You need a tall outbuilding to store it. Do you plan to haul it with the burb regularly or get a slip for the season? From the plaque on the prop, it looks like it spent time in the water. Merc 260 w/bravo 3? Good combo, prop sets can be a bit pricey though. Have the boys given their approval yet?, I know how the love the bal harbor. Looking forward to seeing it in August, congratulations, it will make a nice river boat.

these are neat boats.. there was one maybe a year or two later that was even neater (before all the glastrons started looking lame though - 91 or 92 I suppose that happened?)
I would imagine pretty heavy though?

We're going to be re-making the cuddy cabin cushions... this is a really cool way to do zippers on the cushions.

been busy on house projects so have not done much.
instrument panel is back in and mostly wired
new cushions for the cabin are in process
hopefully get wiring wrapped up next week
ordered axles with disk brakes and actuator from the company that used to make Eagle trailers.
when i install them i will "sister" a 2x1" channel on top of the frame to beef it up, and redo the inner bunk so its not resting on the strake.
this seems to be the most cost effective route. i have seen some of what i would call a "storage trailer" that were affordable.
the only other promising trailer was the one in red wing with a V266 on it.
updates and pix to come soon.

Been a while since I updated, turns out the mud plate wasn’t that hard stuff because it was epoxy… Apparently I’m putting the second transom replacement in this boat.
Most of the grinding is done, and I have the first piece of the transom cut hopefully I’ll be able to start gluing it in this week.
On the way home from Rathbun today I stopped by the yacht club trailer factory, the parts guy was kind enough to take a few minutes away from his Father’s Day to come in and let me pick up my new axles.

As seen in the previous photos, stripped off two layers of ablative paint with primer in between them from the transom. I didn’t want to deal with this now but I figured with all the hardware off it was the right time to do it, Ordered interlux inter protect 2000E and VC performance epoxy. I will just paint the transom for now. The last picture shows the second layer of tabbing which also included covering the whole inside of the transom with biax. All that’s left is to patch the outer stringers and pour a little bit of foam.
Earlier this week I filled all the gaps with Epoxy/cabosil and tabbed in bottom and sides.

Drilled all the necessary holes in the transom last night, used the fixture for the holes to mount the drive. because I had to install the transom in sections I decided to cut the keyhole ahead of time so I could use it for clamping, I didn’t consider the clearance for the steering arm . The fixture has angle drill guides so you can just use a holesaw, if I had planned ahead of time I could’ve just not cut that part out. Fortunately I had a fixture in stock, The keyhole cut from the CV 16 V8.

Quick, bolt the hatch shut. Don't let him out till it's done. On a side note apparently Glastron did build at least one model that offers room to service the mechanicals.

I might be able to come up Tuesday night and help put the axles in Wednesday morning if you like. Maybe use the Excursion to splash the boat and have an empty trailer? Let me know if I can help.
-
Although I really appreciate the offer, that’s too much work to do too close to the meat. I also need to make some modifications to the bunks.
Once I declare the boat to be seaworthy we are going to slip it somewhere for a week so I can have some time to get the trailer sorted out. I don’t even have wheels and tires yet.

Amazing work Joe, let us know how the surge tongue bleed goes, i had to make a fitting to run a power bleeder. They are tough when dry. Curious to know the phone number on the side, was it owned by a rental co?

Perfect fit ?
-
Never seen anyone cut a transom pattern to set trailer bunks, but I'll admit, that's really a great idea. A bit surprised you didn't paint it first, maybe needs a final fit before you make it pretty? Great work in such short time, thanks for taking the time to document and share as well.
-
He was in a big hurry. No time to paint. Lol. He did paint the riser thingies that hold the bunks

Well, I think it?s sound mechanically, fired it up tonight check the advance again, 8?, static 32 at 4000 rpm. Seems to idle decent although the mixture screws don?t seem to make much difference so that?s a little disconcerting. We?ll see Friday afternoon when we launch it.

Interesting issue with the idle mix, but if it idles well, that's generally good enough. Curious to know how it performs in transition above idle if it stumbles. How was the carb on the sbc? Hope it goes well
