Hello!
« on: September 17, 2019, 01:27:19 PM »
This is Paul from Woodbury, MN and McGregor, MN (lakehome).

I am the owner of a soon-to-be-classic 2001 Glastron GX 185 SF and I am the downhill slope of a major restoration.  I am the second owner, owning the boat since 2003.  Pictures below.  If anyone has questions about what has been done to this boat, just let me know!

Glad to be part of the community.

That is gelcoat - Forest Green with "Disco Flake"

The fiberglass and gelcoat was done at X-Treme Paint in Wyoming, MN (http://www.x-tremepaint.com/) and the upholstery was done at K&M Upholstery.  The flooring is Flexiteek (https://www.flexiteek.com/).  Swim platform is from swimplatforms.com (http://www.swimplatforms.com/).

If anyone is interested in some of the before or in progress pictures, happy to post them.  The restoration started in 2015 and the boat was back in the water in 2017.

Cool - I'll post more when I have some time, but here is some for now.  Before pictures - what these pictures really don't show very well is a bunch of hairline cracks in the fiberglass and the seats were really pretty dirty and impossible to get clean.  As they say, this was a 20 foot boat - looked really good from 20 feet away.

And, here is a shot of the console transformation.  One goal I had was to remove as much plastic junk as I could during the restoration as the little plastic trim pieces were starting to break off.  So, the plastic dash was replaced with a custom fiberglass console with in-dash fishing/GPS electronics (Humminbird Helix 7 with side imaging and down imaging).  Speedo delete (and no pitot tube).

I'll post more later....gotta run!

Thanks for your interest!

I like it!  Floor is something to consider, appears it might hold up better than carpet.

So far, the flooring is holding up well (three seasons).  With Flexiteek, you really need to have someone knowledgeable doing the install otherwise you can run into problems with "bubbling" or air pockets (so I have been told).  We used some folks on the St. Croix (JL Boatworks) and they did a fantastic job : https://www.jlboatworks.com/maintain-protect/flexiteek

One thing I hated on my Glastron prior to the restoration was the non-skid material they used on the top of the deck lid.  Great at keeping you from slipping but also impossible to keep clean and great at trapping dirt.  Also, I use this boat a least a couple of times a week to go fishing and I was sick of pulling hooks out of carpet.  Couldn't find a way to Flexiteek the casting platform in the bow, however.

One item to consider, however, is weight.  Flexiteek is pretty lightweight but still adds weight.  I believe this Glastron had a dry weight of about 2300 pounds and with the changes I've made (primarily swim platform but also the flooring and fiberglass) I would guess that I am running closer to 2800 pounds dry weight and then probably closer to 3000 pounds with fuel and gear.

I had to upgrade my boat lift capacity after these changes, so beware!

Was there any wood rot ?
Stringers OK ?

That was a VEC boat.

Actually the Ski and Fish models of that year were not VEC boats, but you are right - the standard GX models from that era (non Ski and Fish) are indeed VEC boats (and future Ski and Fish models were VEC until the Genmar bankruptcy).  I don't believe anyone is building VEC boats anymore - even Larson which ended up with the VEC technology after the Genmar bankruptcy (please correct me if that isn't correct).

The stringers and wood were good (boat only 14 years old when we started the restoration) and the boat has always been garaged and covered.  The only thing we really needed to work on was the floor on the aft-port-side - that was getting soft where the livewell is at.

Thanks for those links!  I had not heard that Larson was now owned by Polaris!
