Still new to boat ownership
« on: February 05, 2020, 04:44:38 PM »
I'm still new to boat ownership. I have had this boat 1 1/2 years. When I first got it I serviced the drive and changed the water pump and impeller. Since then we have taken it out 3 times in 2018, 3 times in 2019 and that is it. All fresh water, flushed after. Never ran dry, always with water connected.

Everyone knows the boats progress I think as I've posted things here as I have reached milestones.

Should I change the impeller again before this seasons 3 outings?

I doubt it would need replacement with that amount of use, easiest way that I know to check it is to pull the fresh water hose inside, then idle it for a few seconds when on the muffs.  Even at idle, a good impeller puts out lots of water.    Second method is just pull the lower, carefully pull up the cover about halfway, and inspect the impeller.  If the vanes are intact and still pliable, you should be good to go.

Mercury recommends every 3 years regardless of use... We don't replace that many at 3 years as many customers wait until they fail, but at 3 years the impeller has taken a definite shape and the vanes don't spring back straight easily.

I don't do mine every 3, but for sure by the 5th year i do...
