Title: Need help changing mercruiser 120 belt
Post by: 75starflight on May 02, 2012, 09:24:43 PM
Well all, I am in need of some knowledge.

Have a new belt coming for the 120 in the Starflite, but I am unsure on how to change it since it straddles the motor mount. Can I prop the engine up by the oil pan with some lumber and take the mount loose or is there a better method?

Thanks,

Brandon

No need to prop up the engine. Loosen the alternator so it pivots inward to slacken the belt. Remove the two bolts indicated in my picture and remove the spacer that was held in place by the bolts. Take note of its orientation to be sure to reinstall it the same way. With the spacer removed you should be able to maneuver the belt off the pulleys, past the front mount and through the opening where the spacer was. When the new belt is on slide out the alternator to take up the slack and keep strong tension on it while tightening the alternator in place.
