Title: 1975 Evinrude 115 HP first start in 24 years
Post by: InkyDoggy on July 21, 2021, 10:17:07 PM
Well I located a good gas tank today and put fresh gas and oil mix in it. Hooked up a new battery and the Evinrude cranked about 30 seconds and fired but stalled. Then I cranked it again and it started up and ran rough for a minute or so and smoothed right out and I ran it until it warmed up and it idled fine. This is the boat and motor I purchased last week and it was last stickered to be on a lake in 1997 so this boat has not been used in 24 years. I am a very happy camper that it ran so good on this start up so now I will check the plugs in it and see if it needs anything else besides to start using it again. Any thoughts on what else I should check out on it before taking it to open water. I sure don't want to get stranded out on the lake.

Yeah I was going to do a replacement of gear lube and install a new impeller even though it was spitting out water fine while running but 24 years in limbo it should be very dried out.

Stay close to dock or have a friend with a good boat and tow line.

Well I finally got to the gear oil change today. The guy before me had it filled with Automatic transmission fluid. I never in my life would have expected to find that in this Evinrudes gear box. I do not know if it hurt it but I am sure it did not help it much.  It has fresh marine grade 80 / 90 gear lube in it now so I am just hoping it wasn't hurt and will run good after the change of oil I put into it. Also got the new impeller installed for water pump so it should be good to go and try out. The impeller that was in it looked okay but since I had thre new one ready to go I put the new kit in it. Will be tryin g it out in a few days to see how it goes on the lake.
