1969 153 Futura Steering cable
« on: July 19, 2021, 04:32:13 PM »
Looking for a steering cable for my 1969 153 Futura. Does anyone know which one to buy that will fit my boat. The one in my boat is frozen solid with no movement at all either way. Looking to get a new one and I guess the book states the one for my boat is 11 foot cable.

If I remember right ...
I replaced the cable in my V156 with a 12 foot cable, because they didn't make 11 foot cables anymore.
Check to make sure you have clearance behind dash for the rotary hub, as it might interfere with gauges.

I took the one out today that was in my boat. Very different then anything I have found online. It has a big tubular rack and pinion that says Mercury on it. It was also 18 feet long and looped around to make it fit up near the driver. It was looped under the carpet. What a dopey way to install a steering cable in a boat. I am almost certain that it is not what came in my boat and was added into it somewhere along the line of previous owners. I am thinking of just getting a new system and change the steering wheel and all to a new style system. Not sure what to get yet but will keep looking at them and try to figure it out. Just don't want to buy something and find out I would have to return it because it will not work correctly. This cable I took out is froze up real good. I have to keep the tube that was on the back near the engine so a new cable can be installed through it for it to work correctly. Sure don't need one 18 foot long either. Will do some checking around near me for some places that may carry these and see if I can find something.

I found a name on the cable i took out and this video shows exactly what I have from my boat. Anyone know where to buy a new one of these so I do not have to take the wheel and hub out and replace all of it?

Not sure if you can still get "ride guide" cables or helms anymore.
I would replace everything with a SeaStar NFB system.

You would also need a new wheel if you do, your Ride Glide might have a square shaft hub.
The SeaStar will have a keyed / taper shaft.

Picked up a good 11 foot cable from a guy on this forum and put it in the boat today. Good to go now as it steers great now that the cable moves like it should.
