Mercury 3 litre
« on: August 05, 2021, 11:19:28 AM »
Just like to send out a word of warning to anyone with a mercruiser 3 litre with a Rochester 2 barrel carburetor
I have a 1978 CVX16 SS with the above mentioned engine. Totally original very low hour unit with original upholstery and carpet. Spent most of its life in a boat house in northern Alberta Canada where the boating season is less than 3 months.
Have owned this unit for 5 years engine worked flawlessly very strong and powerful.
Then suddenly loss of power and engine knock.
Just got word from engine rebuilder that there is a small fine thread bolt that found its way into the combustion chamber where it did a lot of damage.
Upon further examination we discovered that the bolt migrated off the bottom of the Rochester carburetor into the intake manifold thru the intake valve and into the combustion chamber, not a common occurrence.
The base plate on the carburetor is fastened to the main body of the carburetor by 3 bolts 2 of which are external and 1 which is between the butterfly valves on the bottom of the carb, this is the one that came loose and did severe damage. Thus if any of you have this set up pls take 10 minutes remove the carb then remove the bolt and reinstall with blue lock tight, could save you a lot of time frustration and money
Can provide pictures if anyone is interested
Happy boating
