Title: I REALLY hate it when that happens!

Had a little 'driveway disconnect disfunction' last night. Dang it! Dam near poked a hole in the tailgate. Duhh!!!

Doug, see if it will pop out from the back. My neighbor backed into something with his Chev Silverado - would cost $800 to fix but he popped it out and it hardly shows.

I dunno Dave. I just showed it to my neighbor the dentless paint, er, paintless dent removal dude. That sob laughed at me! Some freakin neighbor he turned out to be ...

I'm thinkin' a lil spackle & a big Glastron sticker oughta hide the damage ...?

??? Know what happens when you leave an old ford truck idling in the garage with the driver's door open? ???

 :-/

 :-[

At least the garage door was open too.  :o

Ooh owch Chris. That sucks! That wasn't recently was it?

I had a similar experience with one of my Mustangs. Back when T-tops were still a novelty the neighbors kids were monkeying around in my car. To this date not one has owned up to how the transmission mysteriously shifted itself into neutral. But the car rolled back & caught a concrete block lampost with the open driver door.

Guess I should be thankful it stopped at 90 degrees. Coulda been worse?

ya, happened last week. Was hooking up the cv-v8 to the truck.  I started the truck and got out to hook up the trailer which was behind the truck on the driveway.  Backed up a little and got out to hitch up the trailer.  Was standing behind the truck lowering the trailer jack and the truck slipped into reverse.  Truck started moving backwards, I thought it was just rolling (t wasn't)! It proceeded to back out of the garage with the driver's door open.  Door caught on my work bench, folded all the way forward on the way through the door!  Pushed the boat and trailer on out of the driveway (not hooked to the truck), I got the truck shifted back into park before it rolled all the way across the street but the boat continued on an arched path out of the driveway headed to the neighbor's car .. I  managed to get the trailer stopped too before it hit anything but the damage was done! Truck did not have a scratch on it until then!  Anyone want to do some body work????

I feel your pain Chris. That is a beautiful old Ford. I know you though, you'll have her all fixed up in no time!

The shift linkage may be a little off. When it's in park on the column, check to make sure the tranny is all the way in park too. I can't remember where you adjust it though.

Fix-it funds are bare right now.  I pushed the dent out and ordered a set of hinges.  At least it will open and close right and will keep the interior dry on lake trips now!  I'll get it fixed as soon as I can but there are sure a lot of other projects in front of it.  At least the AC is off for the year (I hope, only highs in the mid 90's this week), no more $300 electric bills will help making project funds grow!!

Boy that's a bummer Chris. Bet that episode got the ol adrenaline runnin though. Having to stop the truck & then chase down the boat?! Warp pucker factor I'd imagine ...

Years ago my Dad was loading a car on an unhitched trailer up in NC to haul down here. Sadly I wasn't there to witness it but evidently he came up onto the trailer a lil 'hot'. When he hit the brakes the trailer jumped the chocks & started off down the hill headed for the creek. Slowly at first but gathered momentum quickly. It was then he discovered the side rails on the trailer prevented him from opening the door & bailing out.

Told me later he instinctively pumped the brakes & kept trying to steer all the way down ... Heh heh heh. Well lucky for him the nosewheel strut sheared off where the ground levels nearing the creek. Tongue plowed into the dirt & stopped the trailer just shy of the water.

Woulda been a shame to lose a cherry 50th anniversary 300ZX turbo in such a fashion. That and the old man too I suppose ... (Kidding!) However in retrospect that'd be a finish he'd be proud of. I think he would've preferred that to dying of cancer a couple years later.

My advice to those of you who have recently lost loved ones? Don't waste your time & energy "mourning". Mourning is an emotion that's as worthless as worrying. Celebrate that persons life instead & their accomplishments & the good times you shared together.

Ya, well, my pride was hurt more than anything.  It's just another dented old Ford on the road now.  Could have been much worse. It was one of those times that you look around after in wonder if anyone saw that!  Fortunately, NOT!  LOL ..... Would have been fun to watch I imagine.   A bonafide OH Sh@#$ moment!

I agree. Far worse if anybody else'd seen ya do it ...

Oh well. Dents "add character" Granpappy Jack liked to say.

one neighbor walked by after I had chased down the boat and said "good morning, how is your day going???"  I had all I could do to not choke him!

Not so pristine anymore, thanks to the OMC "electric shift" feature on my outboard that malfunctioned just as I was docking to pick up Sandy this weekend.  What a great way to start off our weekend.

So I'm approaching the dock at idle, as I get close, I go to neutral (as I've done a thousand times) but I'm noticing just a few seconds later the boat keeps moving forward, I'm thinking "what the heck is going on" so what do you think I do (what would you do?), put it into reverse and gave it some gas to stop the momentum... the boat ACCELERATED forward!  I immediately went back to neutral and cut off the switch, but there was absolutely nothing I could do at this point.  A split second later a huge WHAM, and then another WHAM/THUD as the boat ricochets off one side of the pier (starboard) then into the dock/boardwalk in front backed by concrete retaining wall.  THANK GOD my wife, who initially tried to reach down and grab the boat, didn't get her hands in the way.  It all happened so fast, we were both stunned, and didn't initially understand what had happened.

ELECTRIC SHIFT feature of these motors:  BEWARE!!!  If working properly, when you're in forward, the solenoid is "de-energized", the designed default position, so if it ever stops working, you can "make it back" to the dock.  When in neutral or reverse, the solenoid is "energized" and holds it in this position.  When it stops working?...  you are ALWAYS in forward, regardless of where the shift lever is.  All you do at this point is control the throttle speed.  There was no warning.  I think I?ve heard these electric shift motors referred to as ?dock busters??... I now know why.

After I calmed down, which took about a day, maybe I?m still not, we used the boat afterwards, but had to paddle out, point it in the direction we wanted to go, and fire her up in forward.  I?m still at a loss for words.

So, I?m not sure what to do.  There is stress cracking way under the impact sites, both sides and in front that you can?t see in the pictures, and the top deck is ?buckled? up slightly.  I?m afraid it can?t be fixed properly or look right ever again.

OUCH ! ! ! !

*%#@!^+$#@^*)_$#   ....   Mark that SUCKS !

I think the same thing happened to my boat years ago, in about the same spot as yours.
You can see gel is a bit differant in that spot ... But you have to get right up to it to see it, so yes it can be fixed well enough that only you ( and all of us ) will know it happened.

I feel so bad for you Mark, I know that's gotta bum you out!  You have to get that fixed, that boat is so pristine.  As stated, it may not be perfect, but it'll look a lot better than it does now.  Hopefully you can get an "off-season" rate on the repair.  Really glad no one got hurt brother, that could have been bad.

Yes, bummin for sure.  For the rub rail, metal and rubber, does the whole side need to be replaced or a section?  And is there a source for these parts?

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the mis hap.
Anything can be fixed so dont sweat that too bad. Good thing no one was hurt. So that solenoid needs to be replaced?
Title: Re: I REALLY hate it when that happens!

Hey Ross, not sure yet.  It's either a wiring problem to it, or the soleniod itself (which I understand is IN the lower unit)?  I'll have to obviously address that too... kinda pissed with this engine, though I know it's really my fault for not recognizing what was happening quick enough.  Talk about a weird sensation driving it afterwards... I can put the boat in reverse and throttle up while we're going forward ...  ??? ... just not natural.  Would like to replace at some point, but not the timing for it with the job hunt, etc.  So, it may be a while before all this stuff gets fixed.  I think my priority is the hull/rub rail... can't stand to look at it this way!

Jason, recent?  Must have hit some debris?  That's a bummer... like you said, lot's of bad luck goin' round.  I'm throttling back.

Garbage can in the driveway!

Oh well, If wanted out boats, tucks, toys, ect to look perfect forever we wouldn't use them and they would sit in the garage. What's the fun in that??!!

Ooh owch! Oh that's a bummer man. Well, at least it's above the waterline ...?

Good thing your wife thought twice about trying to stop it. That could've easily resulted in a broken arm. Even small boats carry a lot of momentum. 'Course you already know that ...

Ah well it happens to the best of us Mark. Luckily fiberglass is very forgiving material. The right gel-coat guy could make that look like it never happened. Probly put a lil dent in yer wallet though, but what're ya gonna do.

I wouldn't be in a big rush to replace the rubrail insert. Heck that oughta clean up okay. Someone who knew their way around aluminum could probly massage that rail back into shape too.

Good luck with it.

Mark

Purchased the rub rail insert through West marine it comes from TACO metals in Florida, but you cannot order direct from them.  Maybe you could figure out a way to do that.

Also they have the aluminum sections but only in 12ft, West sain they could get in longer pieces I dont know.

Look up Taco metals for all your parts

Good luck sorry to hear about your bad luck

Jeff

Very sorry to hear of your mess Mark.  I am sure there must be a shop similar to WhiteBear Boat Works down there.  If not bring it up next summer I am sure they could fix the gel and the rub rail could likely be straightened out or replaced.  There is a plate and polish shop here in Phoenix that I have had straightened out trim a few time for cars and trucks that has a way of making the worst look like new again. Solid is much easier to have matched and repaired than flake.

I share your pain.  Still kickin' myself for the fateful morning I left the truck running with the door open!  Done it 100 times before.  First time is always the worst.

Today, October 18, 2010, is the one year anniversary of boating on the St. Croix with a hole in the hull and almost sinking the boat. I still can recall the horrible, depressing, suicidal, bitter, angry, hopeless, and frustrating thoughts. But it is now all fixed.
Gelcoat is perfect color and workmanship is excellent. Thank you White Bear Boatworks.

THANKS ALL, appreciate the help and words!
Doug--that's true, didn't think about it, but the insert can probably be used again, not much damage, maybe even the metal with the right person working it.
Jeff--thanks for the info, I'll check em out and let you know if I run into any roadblocks that I can't get through.
Chris--hmmmmm, WhiteBear, huh?  I see David used them too.  I'll keep that in my hip pocket... I'm talking to a guy now in Double Oak TX, J&J Sports, comes highly recommended by a senior member of our outboard club, been doing this for 40 years.  Sent pics, talk to him about it, now waiting on a rough estimate, but I may be pulling it to him this week sometime.  BTW--I see your truck Chris, sorry bout that!... especially tough when this stuff happens to classic vehicles in great shape!  Again, nobody hurt though... that's a positive!
David--OMG, you hit the nail on the head... going through some of the feelings right now, but it's getting a little easier getting some indications that it can be fixed properly.  I'm ok until I see it in the garage.  I'm looking forward to the point where I can look back at the pictures and smile, MAYBE.

Mark, IF you want to replace the rub rail insert, you need Taco V12-0338.  I just replaced mine last spring because it was pretty scuffed up from rubbing against piers over the years.  Can't order directly from Taco, but got it from West Marine.  $99.00  Got it in a 50 foot length, in black of course, so the complete Taco part number is:  V12-0338BKA50-1.   Note in the attached pic, that the insert comes to more of a pointed edge vs. the rounded edge of the original insert.  Taco does make a rounded edge insert, but it will not fit our rub rails.  My boat didn't need the entire 50 foot length, so I have some left.  If you, or any other member, would like a piece to make absolutely certain it will fit your rub rail, just let me know.  I would be happy to mail out a sample.  Replacing the rub rail insert is easy.  Took me about 2 hours by myself to remove old and put in new.

Mark - I think that's your best bet. Like BC noted the insert available has a different profile than the one currently on the boat and I think in your case you want to keep it as original as you can. Also the aluminum extrusions are only sold in either 10' or 12' lengths(can't remember exactly) so you'll have to buy 2 and have a seam. Like you said I'll bet the right person could straighten that back to where you won't even notice it.

Sorry to hear about the mishap.

Haven't ordered from Taco in awhile but believe my shop's account is still active. $100 minimum order last time I checked.

Ironicly I have stb old & port new inserts on the boat. (My buddy only had enough to do half.) But to date not one person has walked up & accused me of having rubrail inserts that don't match ...?

Heck ya cain't see it from here:

How much do you need to finish.
I have a section left from doing my 174.
I'll trade it for a bimini cover if it's enough.
