Hey all.
Saturday--picked up the V-166 from Gulfcoast Composites in Houston. Fiberglass work is completed, and although it's not perfect, I like the job they did and you have to really look hard to see that it's been worked on. They had a time matching the top deck "Gold" color, so they ended up redoing the gel all the way to the back. Completely new rub rail (metal and rubber)... couldn't save the old.
Sunday--I'm also not trying to rub it in, but it was almost 80 degrees here yesterday (won't last long, tomorrow it's supposed to be near 20, with snow possible on Thursday!... I know, whaaaa, right?), perfect day for the Surflite 153 Hardtop's maiden voyage for us... last time it was dipped in water was approx 1970. Thought you might like to see some pictures of it, I put two here, but there is a link to more if you're interested.

Among a few items we've done to the boat recently... hardtop liner replaced, new battery box (compare to old), seat boxes painted/new hinges, new flag, trailer paint touch up, hubcaps rechromed, wheels powder coated, new lights, prop insides (rubber) is new, good cleaning/polishing/waxing. Engine purs like a kitten and boat planes out/handles nicely. It was a great first outing... I have a few things to work on, like adjusting the throttle cable, rollers/bunks on trailer, etc.,... all small stuff.

Wow that looks nice! Was a beautiful weekend here in AZ too. I did not make it out on the water though. >:( One of these days I will again! :-/

Are you in Houston? Not sure if you saw my post from a couple of weeks back but there's a boat yard on Hwy 290 just east of Austin called Tahoe Boats. He's got quite a few Glastrons over there. There's one that I'm really thinking about hauling out of the weeds if it's in good enough condition to save. Looks like a 74 - 76 bowrider with the original Johnson 115. I'm planning to go the first weekend of March.
He's got some pretty interesting hulls there from the 60's an early 70's.

Thanks all! Very fun, looking forward to spending lots of time on them this year. Gregg... good to have some luck on these finds, couldn't tell it was a diamond in the ruff from the original discussion with the owner, just had to check it out myself. wiliermdb--I'm in San Antonio... I haven't been to that boat yard yet, but it's close and I've heard of it before. Would love to check it out... let me know when you're going to make the trip, maybe I could meet you there and help you drag one out of the yard. There used to be an old salvage yard here in San Antonio, but the city has pretty much driven him out... very little left, think the place was called A-1 Boat Salvage.

Wow! That is one sweet original. Almost a shame to put it on the water. Best saved for boat shows!! Just can't say enough about the perfect original state of both your boats. Museum quality!

This is the one I'm interested in. I believe, to the best of my knowledge, (comparing to the brochures) it's a 1976 T-166. I didn't spend much time looking at it because I was semi-trespassing. It was a Sunday and they tore down the old fence around the field.

Boats look fantastic Mark. I still can not get over how you managed to find not ONE but TWO pristine beauties like those. It is just great to see them saved and owned by someone who appreciates what they have.

Thanks Andy & Ross... they have their blemishes/marks you can't see in the pics, but I'm not complaining. Planning to use them a lot this year, just have to try and be careful. That location is the military rec camp on Canyon Lake... it's one of the few protected spaces on the lake. It's windy/choppy a lot here unfortunately.

wiliermdb--sounds good, that T-166 looks like it's all there... wonder how long it's been sitting in that field? If I make it up there this month, I'll try to see what I can find out about the boat for you. Yes, the CV-16 advertisement above---I have seen it actually. I talked with the owner about a month ago... he was bringing it down to his lake house about 15 min from me and even though I wasn't in the market for this particular boat, I went and looked at it. It was more work than I was ready for, but restorable. It's been sitting out for a while, so floor/stringers are questionable (although I didn't get in and poke around)? Seats have tears, were tossed around. The flake was originally GOLD flake (looks like Silver flake in the picture), and the flake just falls off on your hand. The hull has dings, but no major damage from what I remember. Thought the windshield had a crack too. I recommended that he take better pictures to show the condition a little more accurate.

Mark I am curious about how the Surflite planed out. Have you tinkered with the motor angle at all?
That baby sure looks long for a 15 footer...at least compared to mine. Maybe its an optical illusion. :-/
Man, even the trailer is sweet!
I just notice something. The hard top actually sits over the windshield? More head room? How does it connect? Chunk of fabric?
I meant to ask too, did you do any work on your steering? I'm going to need new cables at some point. Wondering if you had a source.
After looking at the brochures, I can see why yours looks longer. The splashwell area is much shorter on yours making the interior larger.

Ross, it planed out pretty well... was being easy on it, but the boat is so light, with just Sandy and I, it didn't take much effort at all. The old motor has 4 tilt settings, I put it on the furthest out and it worked good, but I'll have to try the others. Next time out hopfully the water will be a bit smoother to be able to see more of the effect. My gut feeling is it'll be best there or maybe one more in. I touched up the trailer paint, still have some interior to work on and bunks, but for the most part, it's good to go. The design of the hard top does allow for more head room, they way it clamps on the top of windshield, and then angles up a few inches before leveling off. There are two flat aluminum hooks that grab onto the windshield metal edge, then you twist and close the clamp and it cinches down on it. The bottom of the hard top just sits in two aluminum grooves/or plates. I've heard horror stories of these things flying off going down the highway... but as long as the clamps stay in place, which it seems like they will, should be no problem. I'll just have to keep an eye on it while trailering. I can take some better pictures of how they work later on and post them. Only work I did to steering was wipe/clean the original cables off (had some kind of "gunk" all over it) on the entire length of both sides, lubricate the pulleys, and tighten the cable and brackets back by the engine (was a little loose). Other than that, had to do nothing else with the steering.

Sometime if you think of it, could you snap a pic of the cable connetion at the motor? I think there are various ways that is accomplished. I may have to make a bracket. No big hurry. I havent touched it since Dec. In door projects right now.

Is this what you need Ross? The tape was put around the wire ends to prevent catching on fiberglass/plastic when in a sharp turn.

Perfect Mark. I can see now the kind of stuff I am missing. Wonder where the heck one finds this kind of thing? Boat junk yard? I do have a metal plate that connects the ends of the cables and that would either attach directly to the motor or to something else first. I dont know.

Thanks Gregg. Lots of good info.
I'm going to try to stay with the original Becket set up because I want to retain the metal steering wheel. The two times I changed out steering systems before (my Larson and the 67 Bayflite) I had to change the wheel too.

Ross, I think my project boat has a full set of pulleys and springs, I know for sure the ones in the stern are still there, the front probably are too. (It's the system where a cable goes down each side of the boat.) You can have the hardware if you need it, I'll be converting.... ;)

I appreciate the offer. It appears I have all the pulleys and stuff but I just am not sure I have all that I need to connect to the motor, since it didnt come with a motor. I'll know more when I pick that up. My cables are crappy though and need to be replaced. I think I kept mine when I yanked it out of the other ones I did a steering swap to but I'll have to check.

Planning to take the Glastron out to Lake Austin this Sunday, launch at Walsh's boat landing betwee 1000-1030, hang out at Hula Hut for lunch, then make a run up river and back.
