Title: NEW SHOP! FINALLY!!!
Post by: V153 on May 04, 2013, 07:15:33 PM
Didn't know for sure if'n the deal was gonna go down 'til yesterday. Things happened kinda fast. Got the keys from the new landlord 'round noon.

Called in the Cavalry and we managed to get everything outa the old shop into the new by noon today. Some assembly required ...

But the sewing table is all set up! And that's the most important thing.

Thanks! Lemme tell ya it's been a long time coming. Almost directly across the street from the old shop, with more parking & less inconsiderate neighbors.

Should add to the efficiency of your work to have more room to spread things out. Also brighter and cleaner.

Added just in time for the busier season.

It gosh darn well better add to the efficiency of my work David! Cuz I'm not entirely sure where the additional $100 bucks a month rent is gonna come from?

Seriously. Yes things will eventually be a lot better. Customers can actually bring their boats to me again. Gee imagine that ...?

My hope is to recoup the added rent by savings in travel time, fuel, and wear & tear on the ole Ranger. Not to mention the time spent absent from my shop doing the aforementioned ...

Ironically I'm coming into my slow season. Most of the snowbirds have already left ...?

Assumed you did your engine work in your shop in your spare time?
From some of your pics earlier, or do you have another big garage?

Hey y'all. Yup been bustin' my a** the past few days. Phew! I'm tuckered out. And I ain't anywhere near done yet.

Yo GC actually I work on my motors here at the house.

No such thing as a stupid question Rich! Well okay it was kinda stupid ...? Heh heh heh

Yah, no boating for me today Gregg, don't I wish ...

More pics tomorrow.

It's a purty big step for me, but something that had to be done. Thanks for the support fellas!

Got a buncha shelves hung, all my binding/welt up. Got the vinyl & fabric back under the table where it belongs. Lighting leaves a lot to be desired but least we've got some illumination. Offices are shaping up, albeit slowly ...  Hope to get some work done on the loft tomorrow so's I can store my foam & lumber up there.

Tell ya a beautiful thing about this joint is it faces due West. So no longer do I get blasted by the morning sun. I guarantee it's at least 5 deg cooler than the old shop. With a West wind and the back door open it's probly 10 deg cooler. No BS!

Another beauty is I've got 11' 7" from the edge of my table to the left wall. Guy's bringin' a 17' Whaler down for a console cover tomorrow. I'm thinkin I'll just have him back her right inside?

Well we got some plywood laid over the office, and tossed the foam up there. Probly gonna build some stairs. Got a few shelves up on the back wall.

Wasn't monkeying around with the electrical at all today, but when I went to take a leak? The light in the head that hadn't worked for 4 days miraculously turned itself on ...?

And the 'creme de la creme' here's a 17' Whaler inside the shop? WooHoo!!

That's my stuffed alligator "Groucho" Gil. What yer seeing is the tip of his tail. His feet are a lil rough too btw ...  Pic coming soon.

Yo Doran, dunno 'bout a/c. 'Specially the whole shop?! Facing West vs East already makes an incredible difference. Hard to believe I worked outa that building across the street for close to ten yrs. Nowadays, temperature wise I feel like I just moved to NC ...? But seriously, I probly will wind up stickin a window shaker it the office eventually.

Got some more organization done today. Well my Mom did, I had to sew some stuff to make some freakin' money! Ain't got much sewin done over the past 5 days.

We're gettin there fellas. Thanks for the support!

Carry on

Pic of "Groucho" for Gil. As you can see he's in purty rough shape. Thought about giving him a bath but 'fraid he'd fall apart more ...?

Pics of my frame jig, bender, and old shop across the street. It's the one with the awning & dark blue door.

Todays update:

Me'n Bobby Beer got the ladder up to the loft built/installed. My patchwork quilt flo is almost done. Rearranged the foam some. Plan is to get any excess lumber/starboard up there as well.

We were making great progress til my buddy Jim Grinnell came by 2 hrs early with his boat. Lemme tell ya when you mix a guy who works for Budweiser with a guy who likes Budweiser, and add a guy who's last name is Beer? All work stops ...

Thought y'all might like this: 27' Wellcraft Nova II converted to bow rider. 'Lil Miss Dangerous' She's really kinda cool actually. Still has a lil cuddy cabin of sorts. Rumored to do 70 or so with a pair of small blocks. Just finished the fore'n aft cockpit covers for it. Note the access "hatches" in the cover(s). Never done that before, it was a lil tricky but ended up coming out great. WooHoo!

Said goodbye to an old friend today as well. Yes I sold the topper off'n the Ranger. Got a buck'n a half for it. Good thing cuz that's exactly what my new tool box cost. Double WooHoo!!

Some more progress:

Finally got the new louver kit in & installed the loft exhaust fan.

Didn't like the shelves against the back wall, so I changed that.

Got my lil security mirror in today too. So when I'm seated at my desk I can see out the front door(s). Cute ain't it.

Should've been working on canvas but took advantage of the cool rainy weather to do a lil on the loft, etc. Did straighten out a dudes mutilated bimini frame earlier. (He ran it into a bridge ...)

Carry on.

Don't you just hate it when those bridges don't move.
It's good you did the louvers now, it won't be long before you'll need a cool suit to get up in the loft. :D
I like your low tech solution, a mirror instead of a monitor.
Title: Loft Latest

I like your low tech solution, a mirror instead of a monitor.
Ya John the mirror's kinda neat. I thought $30 bucks w/free shipping was fair? Not the biggest one they make but I can see the front of the shop from door to door no problem.

I am not a company spokesman ...  But I got it from Superior Mirror in Fairport, NY. Customer service was great, timely delivery, and even though this is the indoor acrylic model the clarity is quite good. We don't need no steenking monitor! Heh heh

Yeah The loft has already been a lil toasty in the afternoon. Glad I got the fan in now. Makes a huge difference. Got creative'n rigged a line to the louvers so's I kin pull them open when the fan's not running. ie. When the wind's blowing from the East.

Check out what the previous genious did to the insulation with a paintball gun. What a freakin moron!

I don't think they make duct tape that wide GJ ...  I'm thinkin cover it up with canvas and/or vinyl?

Well the good news is the roof don't leak. (So's it weren't buckshot ...) We been gettin slammed with rain & wind by that trop storm since Monday. Today was the worst. Ain't seen a drip inside. WooHoo!

Startin some improvements on the 'lanai'. Got the go ahead from the landlord. Tore down the wall in the middle. Gonna tear down those shelves & get rid of the old paint'n used oil'n whatever else. A lil plumbing work is needed too.

Hey for extra credit identify that old fender leaning against the wall. Looks to me like it's off'n a old pickup truck. I'll try to 'member to take another pic of it tomorrow.

Nice job. I know with Ford part numbers that the first digit is the decade an second is the year.

C=60's
D=70's
E=80's

So yea. C5 = 1965

Cool. Might be worth something on ebay.

Hey thanks for the info guys. 'Preciate it!

As luck would have it we have a new business in town. Ideal Classic Cars. Cats came rolling into town a few months ago & bought the old bowling alley/nightclub(s) known as "Yesterdays". Reportedly paid a cool mil for it. Did a total resto on the joint & are now open. Kinda a classic car museum a la consignment shop. Gotta buncha old gas pumps'n other memorabelia. Purty cool I spose.

Think I might advertise the fender there? Got it on CL.

Thanks again for the input J & J. My expertise on Mustangs goes back to my '86 ...

Here's a lil toneau cover I knocked out this morning for my buddy Joe Ferris. Aka 'Wheel'. (Well, that's what I call him ...)

Over the past 10 yrs he's had that dang frame on 3 trucks. The Sierra being his latest. Black Sunbrella Plus this time around, finally managed to beat it into his head that vinyl/laminate(s) don't hold up as long?

Hey Doug ... I know you guys in FL have year-round boating ... but there might be a market for your truck bed bimini if you were to hit up some construction sites ... I know I would have used one in San Antonio, and several of my carpenters would have, too.  Maybe you need to get the word out, offer one or two up on a trial basis - let these guys go jobsite to jobsite and use it, could bring some work your way.

I dunno Dan. That top is one of my best selling tools, wouldya bleve it's bout 15 yrs old? Washed once. But most people want a bimini for their boat vs their truck.

Funny story: My new landlord came scrounging for the rent check this am. (Kinda early in the month dontcha think?) Anyway. He sat down in my Lazyboy'n we got to bs'ing about boating & he asked if that was my boat out front. Since to the best of my knowledge I didn't have a boat parked out front at the time, I asked what the heck he was talking about. He said y'know the red one with the blue top? I said Bill that's my truck ...

No BS!

I'm sure you could go all out for "the right customer" ...
But I can't count how many carpenters (framers & trim), fence builders, concrete workers, masons, ... all kinds of trades in the residential construction industry ...
Out in Texas Hill Country, the properties were big enough that all the work trucks just angled for some shade under a tree.  Put these guys into tighter subdivisions and they scrambler to be first, so they get to park on the driveway and be the first guys to set up in the garage - everybody else is relegated to the curb.  You put a guy with his tools in the back of his truck, and let him use the tailgate as his saw platform - giving him control over his own shade ... hell, I'd even wire it to a 12v small pump with a misting system ...

These guys will do a lot to stay cool and shaded - they work outside 6 days a week.

My '79 CJ had a potty in front of the drivers seat ...

Hey guys thanks for the suggestions. Seriously. Keep 'em comin'!

But when it comes to doing anything other than boats. Golf carts is the direction I'm leaning these days. FL just passed a law allowing 'low speed vehicles' in most sub-divisions, without having to be registered. So long's they're street legal that is. ie. Must have operating headlights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, etc.

Golf carts are big business round these parts. Everyone on Boca Grande, Palm Island, Little Gasparilla, etc owns at least one. Saw this top/design out on Boca awhile back: Thought it was purty cool. Gonna tweak it a lil'n come up with my own version. Purty sure the cart shops'll be interested?

Y'know it's really kinda ridiculous some of these carts. You can get one with a Lamborghini Countach body, or a Rolls Royce, or a Bronco, or a '57 Chevy, ad nauseum. Downright silly if'n ya ask me but I reckon we're just not happy until we've 'personalized' our stuff ...?

Doug - I think you're headed the right direction.  Golf carts are getting to be big in a lot of places.
Out here it's riding mowers.  You wouldn't believe how many people take their riding mower to the grocery or liquor store, even the restaurant.  There was a guy arrested not too long ago for falling off of his drunk as a skunk while he tried to keep it on the shoulder of the road ...
I like the golf carts much better.

Well I finally got 'round to loading up all the old waste paint and oil from the side of the building. Hauled it down to a recycling center near the shop. Guy asked for my license so's I handed it to him'n he went back to his lil station. Came back'n said he couldn't accept the stuff cuz I don't live in Charlotte County. (?) So I asked if my sales tax certificate would work, and off he went. Came back & said no this won't work, this facilty is for residents not businesses. I said that's just great, what am I sposed to do with this crap. He shrugged his shoulders. So then I asked, if I were to bring someone with me who has a Charlotte County proof of residence would you take the stuff? He shrugged his shoulders again & I took that as a yes.

So back to the shop I go trying to think of who I was gonna draft for this mission. As luck would have it my buddy Pete stopped by a lil later to bum some bimini deck hinge wedges for his boat. Said I'd trade him if he rode down to the recycling joint with me. He was actually headed that way & said no problem. He followed me down'n parked his truck at the Home Repot around the corner, hopped into mine & away we went.

Pulled up to the joint, handed the attendant Pete's license. The two had apparently met before so I had to endure sitting between em as they BS'd ...  But in the end we unloaded the goo'n were off.

This my friends is a textbook example of how many government rules & regulations hinder, NOT help, the average citizen. Ludicrous!

One yesterday afternoon'n nuther this morning. For a couple of Joe Ferris's buddys. The trick to em is the length of the bows. Too long'n the material doesn't wanna lay out right, and it looks stupid. Too short'n they might bag water, or worse yet wind blows the bows down into the bed. And then I look stupid ...

Fairly easy to pattern & I make purty good money on em too, so bring em on! I'd be perfectly content doing em all day long. Well mebbe a bimini every so often to break up the monotony ...
