I love your site and have enjoyed reading about everyone's
boats. I got some information off the Glastron Collectors site
and need your help identifying which year my “new” boat
was actually manufactured. My understanding is that the
FOURTH number from the left in the serial number is the year
of manufacture...1 3 1 0 3 6 4
According to my plate, this would make it a 1970 boat,
not a ’72, which is recorded on the boat's registration.
Please enlighten me! Also, would there be another
area on the boat where the HIN might be stamped into the hull?
Transom or under the forward hull? I don’t have the boat here or
I would go look at it.
Thanks for any help you can provide. Also, is this color Lakewood Avocado
or Sage?

Correct ... Your V-170 is a 1970 model, the DA could stand for "Dark Avocado" which was a color used in 1969 boats.
Common problem with old boat's registration for many different reasons.
There might be a piece of paper with serial number glassed in, under left side splash well. (picture - snl-2)
But it would be the same number as on the plate you posted.
There are Glastron / Carlson brochures (PDF's) posted here, you can download them and look them over ...

Brochure don't even show a V-170 for 1972 ....
Your motor looks like (By decals) a 1979 to 1981 model.

Thanks! Yes, correct.
The motor is '85 I believe.
It's the boat I'm asking about as there was a question
when I went to register it.

My motor is actually a 1979, not 80s.
Trailer is 2001.

I had a blue one just like it. Very well balanced boat. With a 135 Merc. Ran 47-48 mph. I loved it but didn't know the Carlson came out that year. Sold it cheap. Then bought a CVX 16 in 1980 which I still have. Make sure you use premium fuel if that motor is stock. The 78-79 had the narrow top piston ring landing.

WOW...that's crazy! I'm not a speed demon, just wanted a nice classic boat to have for my cabin up on Decatur Island in the San Juans. I think the previous owner has used the mid grade of fuel on this motor, but I'd gladly use the premium if you think it's better for it. That CVX 16 is SWEET!

Don't use Ethanol. Octane is 87 to 89 (Mid) It will destroy your fuel lines unless they are graded to use it. But worse it will gel from humidity and as it evaporates in the carb it will plug the metering jets. Premium is now about 92 octane and Regular used to be 91 in 1979. Around $2.60 a gal at Quick Shop. That 85 Hp will have good torque for water skiing.

I agree it's a 1970 V170 as well by the serial number and it's got the '70-'76 football emblems on it. The backup serial number tag should be in the underside of the splashwell in the bilge, glued into the fiberglass. Lakewood Avocado was a color used on that model for 1970 which appears to be the same as Dark Avocado. They didn't have standardized HIN's until sometime in 1973 when they stamped them into the outside right rear corner of the transom.
