Nose Cone
« on: August 11, 2010, 10:49:59 PM »
I been wanting a nose cone for my drive but have not been able to find one I like for the Gen II, so I thought I'd just make one.  I'm not expecting much more speed really  ( maybe 1 mph ) but I think it will help make a turn at speed with-out a blow-out, surely it will straighten the water out some before it gets to the prop and give it something more to work with.  The original Gen II gearcase is almost blunt.  It can't hurt the performance, and I like the look.

BTW ... I can't download the photo thing cause I'm using my wife's lap top since my computer crashed the hard drive, it's like Dial-Up.  I appreciate the help  inserting the photo's.

To post your pics from photobucket you just have to click on the photo button (second on the left above the smileys when you input text) and insert your link in between the brackets that appear in the text window.

Sharp looking cone you got there. Manatees watch out!

Looks awesome Red. Bet it'd play hell on a Manatee though. Not that I have a problem with that ...

I still have the old ('86) gearcase that I twisted the driveshaft out of awhile back. Been dreamin about guttin it & sending it up to Bobs in Tampa for a nosecone & low water pick up job. (Mebbe send it to you instead?) Sadly the way business is lately I'm gonna have to dream on.

Y'know it always cracks me up when people opine, "Well a nosecone's not gonna help ya 'less yer doin X amount of mph." BS! What ... does a nosecone all of a sudden turn into one of those blunt gearcases we're all familiar with under a certain speed?!

All's I have to do is look at a nosecone & I can envision it working for me.

Carry on!

Red, a Minnesota fellow Randy Pierson, boat racer, modifies nose cones. These pictures show the progress. Supposedly prevents blowouts at speeds over 120 MPH.

Very nice job on that nose cone, yeah stock gear case's don't flow really good and just like Doug said a nose cone by it's looks should flow better than stock.

The nose cone mod made a 2 mph improvement in my speed, but thats not all, I was able to make several tight turns at 45 mph to 60 mph and it didn't blow out, I Like it !

I tried holding the camara, the wheel, the throttle and trim ... just about too much to do for this ole man,  but I did get a video of sort, the video was taken into a 12 / 15 mph wind, little chop, 100 degree's ambient temp, and water temp mid 80's, 26 gallons of gas, 69.2 mph, but on the back flip, down wind the gps indicated 70.2

Another 2 MPH at your speeds in a boat is huge. Time/money well spent I'd say. The job you did looks excellent BTW!

A 2 mph improvement when yer already pushin' the envelope is impressive. Nice work Red.

Ya it's interesting how sometimes a headwind don't hurt much and a tailwind don't help much. The average observer would think a boat oughta go a lot faster with a 12-15 mph tailwind. But it ain't always the case.

Yo Red. I'm not seeing what you mean by "turned down planing plate .." Please advise.

Nice work!
Did you just wing it on the dimensions? How did you go about blending it in so nice?
More speed to boot. Just what you needed.

Yo Red. I'm not seeing what you mean by "turned down planing plate .." Please advise.

Looking at the web site ofthe fellow making those nose mod, he improved the hole shot of a big Honda 4 stroke from 8 seconds to 3 1/2 seconds just by turning the (planeing / cavitation) plate down on the edges, now I'm wondering ?  if helped lift the weight of that 4 stroke, of if it would help others .. like Mine ?

Can't see how it would hurt ...  Reminds me of the side 'fins' on my Bobs true tracker. Funnels the propwash more behind the prop than beside? Plus in my case at least it allowed me to do away with the torque tab on the motor. Never missed it, picked up .8 mph.

hmmmm  ... those are some interesting articals alright, I'm wondering, but I don't know if I want to modify my drive anymore,  but the planeing plate on my Gen II is a little wider than the Alpha's .. Stop Me Doug,  I don't have time to do anything else before the meet .. Hold Me Down .. Just say NO  !

I did zero the point of the cone when it was welded on, but the epoxy was just a look and feel thing, after it was painted I could see it's not perfect, but it worked well enough for me to let it alone for now.

Red, you seem to have a feel as to what works and what does not without reading all the theory behind something. And you are not afraid to experiment.
