Anyone tried the Keelguard?
« on: May 24, 2013, 09:32:22 AM »
I've thought about getting one of these for awhile now since my boat is painted and not gelled to protect the finish a little more when I beach the boat. Anyone have any experience with them?

I've seen them, Kurtis, never tried them.

I think 3M sells a clear film protector for car hoods, rocker panels, etc.  I bet their product would be just as good and probably much thinner (and clear) ...

Nope it does not hold up all that well. Saw what happens to that stuff over time when where I work dealt with GM vehicles it just starts peeling off after time.

They do make it in white too, so it wouldn't be that noticeable on my boat.

I think the rest of my boat would be jealous to have a scratch free zone.  LOL!

It'd stick out like Kenny Rogers after his facelift...

Well, my boats entire facelift is still pretty "firm" so I'd hate to prematurely add some razor nicks to it. I think I might get one, cause I do cringe a little inside every time I beach the boat right now...

If I had fresh paint or gel, I'd be doing the same thing!

I have had good luck with the 3M stuff I have seen it on a lot of cars. they put on big sheets of it like a clear bra. I Know I have seen a lot of the smaller pieces start to peel off but the bigger ones seem to be fine.
I think this has become an addiction.

There's some spray can stuff called "Chip Guard" that some new cars come with on the rockers, and door bottoms. It's clear so you really don't see it much.

I have the thick clear 3M stuff on leading edges of the jets I fly. Holds up fairly well but does yellow over time and once it starts peeling off it's done for. Also use a similar thing on the leading edge of props to protect from stone chips, etc. It would work good on an boat because the forces in the water would be similar. The thin "clear bra" stuff would not be very effective IMO. Water would be just like driving through a sand storm.

we install quite a few of these...it is important to prep the gel carefully per the instructions but that said we have not had problems
