Exhaust for SBC
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:49:20 PM »
I'm looking for a complete set of exhaust manifolds for my new engine, SBC.    The OMC logs that came with the Cobra engine are for a jet application, and the Mercruiser manifolds that are on the 898 will not allow for thru hull exhaust.   Considering the GLM center riser units since they seem to be priced well.  This is a performance application, but I'm still fairly new to I/O's, so I'm a bit clueless when it comes to the performance difference between a set of $500 manifolds, and those that cost $2500.  Thanks all, hoping to have this CVZ done by Rathbun, but tracking down parts seems like a full time job in itself.  Plugcheck.

The glm cast iron manifolds are the best deal I've seen on the net, of course some times you might find an individule that can save you some money, as long as they are good manifolds, the glm aluminum manifold set is 100 lbs lighter than the old style mercruiser, and about 90 lbs lighter than the mercruiser center rise manifolds, they are good manifolds. You will also need a thermostat housing and hoses for what ever kind of manifolds you get, they are Not all the same.

Valley Motor Sports in the Twin Cities sells these EMI Thunder Aluminum SBC manifolds for $1005.00 plus freight. Not as affordable as the GLMs but a long ways from $2500.00

$1005 is for the manifold logs only, in black powder coat
the full black set is $1150, the polished set is $1299 most places
the long risers for performance cam cost a Lot more, but you don't have to worry about a water reversion with them

you can run a mild cam with the one in the first picture, like the chevy hot cam, but nothing more than that, the one in the second picture you can run what ya want.
I modify the standard thunder series a bit to divert some water from passing over the top of the exhaust tube, been running the hot cam that way, no problems, I do the glm the same way, both are running fine on both Barb's boats, and Gary's boat

edited:   those are roller cams, flat tappet cams are a little more prone to reversion

maybe so ? I didn't read the add, I've just bought 4 sets of the manifolds, in the last couple years, been pricing them for the reds gold boat this week, $1299 free shipping was the best I could come up with, but if thats the add, you better jump on it, I been paying a lot more than that.
Give Eddie Marine a call, they are the ones that make them in California, I bought my last two sets from him.
