Siblings
« on: April 13, 2015, 08:56:40 AM »
So after somewhere in the area of 1500 miles traveled, the sibling to the V163 is home. 67 V164
Left at 5:00 am Sat morning for our road trip to Howell Mi (between Lansing and Detroit. We needed a road trip anyways, but after the hair raising trip skirting Chicago, we decided to take the northern route home, which I added a couple of hours. GPS said approx 10 1/2 to get there. We arrived there about 4:3.0 PM (with a time zone change) I was worried about the tires of course, but they held up. The bearings did start throwing grease on the wheels but I kept an eye on them and checked occasionally to make sure they were not getting hot. Fortunately, we had no problems, other than filling the Montero many times with gas!
We spent the night in Clare Mi. knocking a couple hours off our drive home on Sat.
The PO's, Nick and Dawn were very nice people to hold it for us, after having many offers on it, including a large flat screen and an ATV. Guess their son was bummed they didn't go for the atv! They purchased it from the original owners son. Used it little and the out drive started leaking fluids. Parked it for 3 years, after having it winterized.
Its not water ready. Needs some out drive work and I don't think I can be seen on the water with the "fishin boat seats"  but we'll see.
I looked at the brochures last night and this model only came with a 120. I was hoping for more, but it should move fine and likely be pretty fuel efficient.
It will be nice to have one with the canopy cover.
Some pics.

Couple more
One odd thing I noticed about this is that there are two keys. One to operate the tilt and the other the ignition. It looks like trim would have been an option, which I wish it had.

The 5 mile long suspension bridge to the Upper Peninsula was pretty cool. There was an ice breaker tooling around breaking up the ice. There was still snow on the ground in spots as well. Wayside rests and many businesses "closed until spring"
We're thinking....isn't it spring? Not there.

Man you got the bug worse than I do! LOL! Nice score!
My V174 originally came with the Mercruiser 120 and also had the 2nd key thing for the tilt but it had been disconnected. The key was to unlock the drive so it could be tilted, the locking mech had been removed by some previous owner and you'd be hard pressed to find the parts. The V174 would get up to 40mph wide open with a stainless 21 prop, should do a little better in the V164. If it comes to it you can always convert it to an Alpha and a 3.0.

I know little about out drives but being that the SSV is considerably newer, I dont know.
I need to educate myself.

im no expert either, but i have lots of the 70's vintage stuff (maybe MC or MR) so if you could not get away with just changing trim system components, im reasonably sure ya could swap the newer drive in. (i have an upper with the correct gear ratio for a 4 cyl).
i bet Rich knows...

It's not just a simple matter of changing the trim system on that setup. You'd have to change out the whole transom assembly and inner mounting plate because it's all integrated. That also means changing out the steering cable, but you can keep the original helm. Plus if you go to R/MR or Alpha the hole in the transom will have to be recut like I did to my V174. Just swapping bits and pieces is going to be a nightmare, this is where a donor boat with a complete package comes in handy.

That is awesome Ross. Glad the trip went without a problem. Cool boat!

My 67 V172 had the key style power trim too. Was kind of annoying but nice to keep it original.

I think I'd find the same outdrive or get yours resealed and enjoy it for the summer...homebuilt seats or not...
