I generally look at boats storage conditions as a means to determine what level of project it's likely to be.  If i see a boat outside, no cover, leaves, and torn up interior, you can be nearly assured all the wood is rotten.  Engines and drives should be demonstrated.  Not running or in parts, i consider as requiring rebuild and price accordingly.  How much of the restoration work you can complete yourself is another consideration.  For instance, if you acquire this craft, and need somone to replace floor, transom, interior, and then rebuild the engine and drive will cost in excess of $5k.  If you did all the work yourself you could save plenty.  Examples of finely restored, or unmolested and well cared for originals do exist at reasonable prices.  Going this route can save you money and stress in the long run.  Right now is the worst time of season to find great deals on boats, especially projects.  Not having the ability to inspect the craft, but from what has been described, I would say $1500.00 is a bit much, especially if the head is off.

Totally agree and I am a big fan of CV-16's i will own one someday.
All things considered...based on your description, unknown condition of motor, volvo outdrive (parts not as plentiful) bad interior, likely bad floor and transom, maybe the gel is salvageable, I wouldn't pay more than 800.00 for it. Dont let your emotions over ride practicality or your ability. It can be difficult but if you can wait for something that is less work and $$, then wait. If you want to take it on, good for you but get it cheap!

Hmmm.

I'm all for saving one and restoring it to operations . . . but it can be a long process.  Like most things worthwhile though, it is not a quick or easy process.  In fact most things I am most proud of took waaay more energy and time than I anticipated.  And in those cases if I had known the effort required to complete it I would never had started it.

With that being said it is important to start with a project you know you can complete; unexpected things will come up and complicate the process.  I was fortunate and stumbled on a boat that only required a new floor and minor electrical cleanup.

I sat in the background and cyber stocked this site till I spotted a boat and price I was comfortable with, then pounced.  Driving a few miles should be considered.  If you've ever been cooking resin/fiberglass at length you'll realize driving a few more hours is preferred.  :)

Patience.

Best of luck.

Again thank you, I learn more each time I'm on this forum, and thank you Rosscoe for a price I should look for on this. As I keep researching, and pondering what would have to be done to the boat to really make it shine and I'm starting to feel against it. I currently have a CVX 16 whose restoration I should probably remain focused on. I saw this ad and got excited, I'm sure one day I'll have my CV-16ss. Thank you all.

Another development, someone else dropped by and offered $500 for it, the owners offered me the same price and gave me first pick. Should I reconsider?

You're not likely to get hurt badly at $500.  If it turns out to be a complete basket case, then you could either sell it for same or part it out.  At least when in your possession, you can take the time to do a complete inspection. Good luck

Sorry for late response. $500 sounds good to me too. Did you buy it?
