What is a classic Glastron?
« on: April 18, 2020, 08:16:08 AM »
The Antique and Classic Boat society says that a boat has to be 25 model years old to be considered a classic (https://acbs.org/frequently-asked-questions/).  Why do you guys think makes a Glastron a "classic" ?

1) At least 25 model years old?
2) Only the pre-Genmar boats?
3) Only the pre-Cadillac, Michigan boats?
4) Something else?

As for me, there is really something special about the pre-Genmar boats...

Having no idea what genmar or pre Cadillac means, unless it relates to the 4 wheel GM model, I find myself with absolutely no concern of what others think qualifies my boat(s) to be part of some club.  I've been down this road with classic VW's, motorcycles, muscle cars, and now appearantly boats.  I like items that folks restore and love over super valuable museum pieces that never get enjoyed.  I do love the museum pieces to admire, but not from an ownership perspective.   Sorry, rant over

Glastron currently manufactures their boats out of Cadillac MI and is a different ownership group that bought some of the assets of Genmar (Irwin Jacobs) which manufactured Glastrons along side Larson boats in Little Falls, MN.  Genmar years would be mid-to-late 80s (I think - off the top of my head) to financial meltdown in 2008/2009.  Cadillac years would be 2009ish - present.

I really don't care either - Glastron has such a rich history I thought it might make interesting conversion.  As a Porsche Club of America (PCA) member, I definitely get the car club stuff - some folks believe the only real Porsche is a 911 and only if it is air cooled (pre-1997).  One thing I will say about the Porsche guys, however, is that they drive their cars.  My Porsche is a 2000 Boxster S that I just put collector plates on if you can believe that (not a 911, not air cooled but still a lot of fun).

Thanks for the explanation, I appreciate the knowledge.  All my Glastrons are or were 70's, and one 1980.   The current Timi project is an 1985 and is different from other Timi's in the group.  So maybe that is a genmar?

As a 1974 914 owner (and PCA member), I've got to point out you have your water-cooled vs. air-cooled backwards. 97 and earlier are air-cooled, your Boxter is water-cooled.

Carry on  :)

Nice catch - mea culpa!  I meant to say air cooled - thanks much!  I corrected my original post.

I know this was tongue in cheek, but during a celebration of the 50 years of the 914 at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart last year, Porsche released a statement confirming that the 914 is and always was a real Porsche....

Not that it ever mattered that much to me - my first car was a 68 Beetle, and I've also owned a 65, 66, and 67 Beetles, a 69 Karmann Ghia, and an 87 Scirocco 16V  8)

Weren't Porsche 356's just warmed over VW's ?
Even the "Kit Car" versions are cool.

LOL...Scott, yes, it was tongue in cheek, but I’ll concede the 914 is as much a Porsche as the 911 and 356.   As for the rest...well they are fantastic cars/SUVs.

For you classic Porsche guys. The Revs Institute in Naples FL has a really nice Porsche collection if you ever get down that way. I’ve been to the museum before. Really nice collection of cars overall.

The cool thing about this collection is they still drive and race their cars too.

Very cool - thanks!

Maybe, someday, there will be a museum of classic Glastrons!
