Starting Issue
« on: April 21, 2021, 02:04:01 PM »
I just bought this 1979 open bow with a 1400.  The boat just had the engine serviced and compression checked and everything ran accordingly.  This is my first boat and I am unsure of the exact starting process using the choke.  The engine briefly ran when I got it in the water but wouldn't stay running.  I think the engine was flooded and didn't have enough time to get warm.  If anyone has any info on the exact process I would be grateful.  I know the boat just needs to run a bit to get warm and it will probably be something small.  I'm just very new to this and could use some assistance until I get more experience.

All of my two stroke outboards I've owned were a bit cold blooded.  Choke till start, then raise rpm about 1200 rpm for a couple minutes.   You should be able to pull it down to normal idle after that.   Always use good fuel and oil, no ethanol.   Change lower unit oil each season, and check levels often can help make the drive last.    Just some pointers, hope this helps.

Merc 140 HP ?
Those are notorious for being cold blooded suckers. Mikes advice is a great place to start.

Any pictures of which control box you have ?
Some have choke with small button and newer have choke in key switch (push in key and turn to start and choke)
All have high idle lever ..

First two pictures are old style.
Third picture is newer style

Yea its merc 140hp.  Thank you very much for the suggestions.  Here is a picture of the controls.  I tried to start earlier and to no avail.  I can smell a lot of gas though so I know its getting fuel.  I just don't know how much to hold the ignition without hurting the starter and how to best utilize the choke.

Guessing your "warm up lever" is your throttle lever.
Push in button at base of handle and should disconnect gear change and just give you just engine throttle.
Move it to about half way forward, push choke button and start motor.
Be ready to add or back off engine throttle if rpm jump up to high.

On my motor I have to let off choke after motor starts, then push it one more time and let off to keep motor running while adjusting throttle (warm up handle on my box) ..
Each motor I have owned starts a little different, as to how much throttle and choke are needed.

Is there an interlock safety key missing?   Greg's pic show the red cord that is the safety switch, it cuts the ignition off should you fall out of boat.

I don't have any info in my repair manuals about that model control box ..
But guessing Mercury  control boxes didn't get safety cords until this style box ..

I dont believe there is the safety key feature.  I will try what was recommended today and report back when I can.  I know this boat can run, I just need to get the start procedure better.

I was able to get it started and it was running fine. Thank you everyone for your input and help, very appreciated.   I was told its not good to put it in gear when you have the muffs on, would people generally agree with that?

Really no reason to put in gear on muffs.
Can't see how it would harm anything .. maybe others know more.
I have never put in gear on muff.
It not a good idea to rev motor and hold at high rpm's on muff, but a few quick blasts to higher rpm's is OK.

Like Gregg mentioned, a few blips of the throttle is fine on muffs.   It has always been my belief that on muffs, air can be introduced which can damage the water impeller if you're running the rpms up for long.    As for shifting, at idle is fine other than the obvious danger of a spinning prop.  Always a good idea to check shifting, especially after making any cable adjustments.

I had the boat on the water yesterday for the first time.  I noticed a few things that came up.  One is that when shifting into gear it wants to stall unless you put it in gear fast.  It was a little annoying and worrisome at first.  I guess with practice this is is something to just live with.  The boat was running strong and got going pretty fast.   Although, after about an hour of running.  I noticed that the engine didn't want to get up to higher rpm's easily when going really slow.  I had to trim the motor and eventually it would get going again.  That didn't seem normal but I dont really have a means of comparing it to anything.  Does anyone know what this could be?  Other than stalling easily when shifting gears and the bogging down part, the engine seemed to run pretty strong.  I was using good fuel and the mixture of oil was 2.6oz per gallon.
