Mercruiser 140 trim ram rebuild
« on: March 25, 2022, 12:41:05 PM »
Happy Friday - I have quicksilver kits for my trim rams on my 79 mercruiser 140. I have one that leaks out of the seal for the rod. Any tips before I do this? I dont think I need to touch the check ball assembly. Is it a simple "spin the cap off and replace the O rings" deal?

Its been a while since I have done one. yes, pretty much spin the cap off and replace seals. I had on piece get stuck in the bottom of mine when I rebuilt them. I believe I used air pressure to pop it out.

Thanks for the info. Yeah it seems pretty simple.

So the kits I bought were wrong, I bought 25-87400A 2 and needed 25-60342A2. But they are $100 each. All of my components are clean and look brand new. No water intrusion or anything. I pulled the o rings out and a couple came out in pieces, so I feel comfortable just replcing the o rings with vitton type that match. Anyone have any input before I do this?

Well I?ve never rebuilt a set of these, as I have accumulated quite a few of the years so it?s easier to just grab something else if there?s a problem. But at 100 bucks apiece for the kits I would certainly try the O-rings first.
If you find either of them have bad parts let me know, I could probably spare one or two.

This is awesome, thanks so much! I don't have the other apart yet, just pulled the leaker apart. But piece of mind knowing I have a source.

Vinton is more of a trade name, but most o rings from viton are fkm/fpm, so compatible with hydrocarbons.    I've rebuilt numerous cylinders over the years, and I generally go to a hydraulic place here to have them source all my seals(Mark hydraulics).   Price difference is amazing.   Last rebuild the vendor(Genie 34/19) list price for the kit was $275.   Mark supplied each seal, total cost was $30.00.    Generally if it says medical, Harley, or mercruiser, or now genie, it's gonna be expensive.

Rebuild was a success. 4 O-rings for each, bled them, topped off the pump and it appears to work better than ever now. Before it was fast up, slow down. Now it seems pretty decent both ways. Lets see if I get any leaks, but with how hard the seals were, I'm pretty confident it is fixed.
