Title: River Run 8/10 or 8/11
Post by: thedeuceman on August 08, 2013, 09:32:25 AM
I'm thinking Ft Snelling, race up to valley fare and back, then maybe through the locks to Mpls.
or the other way around...
looks like there are places to beach and have lunch above hidden falls, i was up the Minnesota as far as 169 last month there did not seem to be many decent looking places to beach.

Kind of depends on water level ...

The water level is down now so there should be some beaches on those parts of the river. I don't think I can make any boating this weekend. Maybe Sunday...we'll see.

I love the St. Croix, but there's too much going on there on the weekend for my little tiny boat
Laurie and I are planning to launch at Fort Snelling at 10:30, plan is to go up through the locks to Minneapolis and then maybe up the Minnesota after that time permitting
Lunch on a beach somewhere

Yeah it's kind of funny, it seems so scary when you hear about it and see pictures, but once you're in there it's not that big of a deal.
Keisha saw the picture on Facebook and kind of freaked because it looks so claustrophobic and I told her she was coming with us back through the locks and we were going to drive her back to her car.
But she said the same thing, that's not that bad.

For the amount of water that has to go in & out, it pretty fast ...
Can you imagine what there impeller looks like ...
LOL !

Well I've never actually researched it, but I would assume a Wikipedia search would get you all the gory details.
But from being through there watching the water move and the sounds that accompany it, I assumed they use the natural hydrostatic pressure, letting the water in from up above and letting it out to down below.
When we were on the sandbar waiting to go up I noticed water rushing out before they open the gates and the level on that little sandbar just down from the falls went up about 4 inches.
