The V-156 and GT150 are the easiest to find, a T-166 might be a little harder.
Something will show up, took me 4 years to find my V-156, and I ended up buying and restoring another boat waiting for the perfect V-156.

Hyperacme...thanks very much for your advice.

Very much appreciated.

I actually found one in a junk yard and is going to need to be gutted, refirbed, repowered and "dollsed" up. I am really not familiar with bringing a Glastron back to life so not sure what to expect and how much it will actually run me.

You will be money ahead finding one in good shape or that some one has already restored.
You will end up with far far more into the boat then it will ever be worth, unless you plan on keeping it forever.
I have near $7000 into my CV and would be lucky to get $3000 if I were to sell it now.
And I did almost all the work on my boat ... With the help of member on the forum ...
If I had a shop do it ... would have been close to $10,000 ...
Just something to think about before beginning a major project.

While not being worth the expense ... It is very rewarding to restore an old boat. car or motorcycle.
Doing it over the course of a year or two, you don't have to come up with all the money at one time.

Even on a old boat that looks like new, there can be problems.
Most old boats will have rotted wood, which needs to be cut out and glass around it ground out.
Cut some new wood and glass it in ...
Do some reading on the subject and ask some question on others projects.

Gregg's advice is spot on.  Try to find a good one . . . and then make it better.

The advice buried in this forum is invaluable.  To start with pick up this book; you can probably find it at your local library as well.

Welcome

Thank you David and Gregg.

I really don't mind doing some minor work now and then say in 1 year or so do a complete re-build.

And it doesn't have to be perfect but I want something that I can splash now and safely take my 8,5 and 2 year old out in and make their day (and mine too ;)

I really appreciate your time and advice fellas.

I am eagerly looking for a 1969 "swinger" or the 1977 T166. The years are very important.

Again, thank you.

OK ...  Though the 1977 T-166 looked like the older V-166's.
Are you looking for the T-166XL with silver flake ?
Is color more important then year ?
They made T-166's in silver up until 1980.
Name changed to T-159 by 1980.

I can't help but ask why the years are very important? Did you have these in the past?

I'm wondering the same thing ... must be a story behind it ...
Title: Re: 1977 T166

The years...LOL

1977...year I was born.

1969...I like the nostalgia of the year.

I know that is crazy...but determined to find one of the two.

*AND thank you all for helping me in the search.

1977 is the year ...
Would it matter if it was a T-166 or T-166XL ?
How about a 1977 T-156 ?

http://augusta.craigslist.org/boa/5484906956.html (http://augusta.craigslist.org/boa/5484906956.html)

1977 Glastron Runabout with Mercury 850 motor. Motor is good, everything works but hull needs work. Needs fiberglass work done on the front where previous owner had a put a trolling motor. floor needs to be replaced. transom is soft and needs repair. I bought this as a project boat to tear down and rebuild but I have neither the time or the money anymore. You could scrap the boat and still have a good engine and trailer. I had started with new cables, fuel sensor, and other odds and ends to make it water ready but it definitely needs work. $500 OBO. text me is best at

Unfortunately that one is gone too!

Yes, I prefer the T166 but definitely open to another model from either 69 or 77.

It's got to fit my, my wife, 3 young kids, a cooler and 2 fishing rods ;)

I came very close to getting a free hull this morning that I felt was a 1977 but when I eventually heard back from the owner, she already gave it away- damn that was a let done.

Still trying...thanks for all your help guys. Truly appreciated.

Only way to be sure the boat your looking at is a 1977 is to check the right rear corner of stern for serial number.
Lot's of boats have wrong year on title or registration.

Looks like the stars have aligned!!! Super stoked!

Don't want to talk too soon but hoping to take delivery on the 1st (not an April fools joke either...lol)

Looks like I'll use her as is and restore at a later date when needed.

Quick question, what are the tell tale differences between the T166 and the T166XL? I've seen the brochure and although it doesn't have the metal flake finish (which was an option) it does have the original Mercury O/B.

Any tips are greatly appreciated...Thanks.

Which one did you get ?

Like a lot of Glastron's the under floor drain was above the floor and water pooled, then splashed on bare wood of floor and rotted rear portion of floor.
Pooled water could also get into wood of stringers and rot them.
Older V-156's had rubber plugs in the two drain holes, so if owner didn't remove them, water couldn't drain at all.
The front open bow was open to entire under floor, so when people (wet) climbed into front of boat, water drained to under floor.

Below are some pictures of V-156's with problems.
First one is the two drain holes in bilge bowel.

I got the one out of Topeka and shipped it and trailer to Fort Lauderdale. Negotiated for a little while and settled on a very, very excellent price.

Surprisingly in very good condition and very original cool stuff too! The motor is original/1977 as well and validated by the SN. The motor has great compression readings and we suspect it also has relatively low hours.

I got a pair of classic, wooden skis too that I will probably put on the wall.

The best part is that it is usable as is and after a few months of having fun and using her I will then pull it out and do a full resto. Pics to follow.

Thanks for all of your help Hyperacme. Really appreciate you sending me the listings as well. I owe you one.

I am very stoked as you can tell!
