Title: Possible mold error on 73 cv16
Post by: Nwolf on June 25, 2020, 11:41:44 AM
Do me a favor and measure between these two mold lines on your cv16s right at 10 ft from the back measured along that bottom line. Mine is almost an inch different. Its taller on the port side.
I'd love to know if that's the same on all of them, or if some strange thing happened to mine over the years.

Mine is a 1976 CV16.
Took measurements 10' from stern, 15" on both sides, But my deck and rub rail are attached and can't get measurement from hull top.
My bow has a shelf for fuel tank and built different then your.
The glass tabbing could have cracked at kick board and your hull twisted ?

Remember you posting this on FB …
Maybe after removing from mold they trimmed one more then the other ?
Second picture is a 1971 CV16 hull rebuilt.

With the hull in supported you loose the curve and the measurements will be shorter or longer. I would bet that is more of the issue.

No I'm not measuring from the cap. I mean from one mold line to the other, it would be the line on the hull section, right under the rub rail. That distance wouldn't change if you cut that piece out and laid it on the ground. Also, the hull was perfectly level when I measured it.

OK .. from little ridge below rub rail to bottom 13 inches both sides.

I wonder what happened to mine? This is strange. Mine was a worst case scenario though. One of those abandoned boats back in the woods with a tree growing in it.

I kinda doubt the mold symmetry would be that far off.  You are using a measurement from the bow which could be affected by the bow point or by the bow in the unsupported hull.  From this measurement your picking a point and measuring the height between to hull transitions introducing another possible measurement error.   If you pulled a string long down the center, are the measured points the same distance from CL?  Perpendicular to CL.    There most certainly can be a difference, but in the end, they custom fitted the halves together, finished, and sold the boat.  My intimidator top/bottom were 3/4" off, so they ground a bevel on the top half, flexing caused it to break along all the penetrations.    I suppose in the end, what could you do to correct this error?
