I pull my drive at winterizing every year to check joint, bellows, bearing, etc.  So I've used Sierra and others with adequate success.  If ya want several years, maybe pay for OEM

Rich said he's seen a few Sierra's rubber impeller separate from brass hub.
So I went with Merc part.

It runs cool, pumps water...

not knowing should i buy the whole shabang? (upper and lower housings?) or do they only fail in a meltdown?

thanks for the help

Run them dry and they can melt down.  More often what I've seen is the metal surfaces get grooved from sand.  New to me boats get a complete kit, the others generally only need an impeller.  Make sure all the bushings and guide are in place, a leak in the supply tube can really limit the amount of water to the engine.
