CV-19 with an Outboard
« on: December 06, 2016, 07:56:15 AM »
I picked this Gem up a few yrs ago from the original owner. Had been sitting under a tarp for a looooonnnnng time. Boat is actually it really good shape besides been dated. I flushed the gas tank, rebuilt the carb, did the typical plugs, wire, cap, rotors and got it running 2yrs ago for a short period of time. After about the 5th start the starter died on me and it was October so I just parked it. This spring I pulled the motor and replaced the start along with a few other things, In the process of pulling the started I noticed the block is cracked(great!!!!). I fixed it up with some Devcon(amazing stuff) it has held just fine for this summer but the motor is tired.

My lake after about july 4th is not very welcoming to a jet boat(gets a little weedy) and I just so happen to have a real nice early 90 Mercury 200hp Blackmax sitting around at home, so it got me thinking, anyone every hang a outboard on one of these.

The fab/glass part doesn't bother me at all, I just want to make sure I'm not destroying some high dollar classic in the process.

Since this is a boating website I will share with you my other pride and joy. Twin turbo GM Ls pontoon. :)

Welcome to the forum Turom700.

That is a sweet lookin' CV19 !   AND PONTOON !
I have never seen a CV19 converted to an outboard, but have seen a few CV16SS's converted.

Few years back, we met a guy that converted his CV19 jet into a I/O.
If I remember right, 350 Chev motor with Mercruiser outdrive.
He did a very nice job, but was still work on some interior parts.
Didn't get any pictures of motor / drive.  Some one said he lives on White Bear Lake or around the area.

Does Steve still have his CV19 O/B for sale ?

My 2 cents ...
Not a high dollar classic ...  BUT if it's as nice as pictures show ... keep it original !    Or as close as you can ...

Welcome, I've followed your toon build and started one myself, just picked up a merc 140 I/O for it.  Most here would want to see that boosted ls in a cv21 or Timi.  Come to the August meet, nice chance to meet other enthusiasts.

I thought about an IO in her, heck I have enough parts and motors todo it with but I started to measure it out and to keep the outdrive high enough so I don't loose performance the motor would stick up higher then the boat, would kill the lines of the boat I think.

I will make the august meet, where is it at?

I live in the twin cites and have a cabin in Brainerd. I was told by the old owner that the boat has only been on Gull lake it entire life, thought that was pretty cool

Treasure island casino south of the TC's on the Mississippi.  Happens around mid August, there will be all the info you'd ever need on this site as the date draws near.

I agree, your boat looks pretty decent. I'd leave it as a Jet. If you really want a outboard CV-19 I'd contact Steve as well........if he still has it. I think it's a total project top to bottom but at least the hull is already there.

That 200hp would be great on a CVX20 Sprint or Ski Machine as well.

Looking forward to meeting you sometime and welcome!

Please don't cut up Billy Bob!   If the 19 was in need of a compleat restoration I'd say go for it but if looks as good as the picture I would leave it "as is" and just rebuild the motor.  I.m.h.o.          You can have this 74 cv-18 if your looking to put that 200 on something

40 hp does seem a bit underpowered, but still a good looking craft.  Interesting rear bumper on the trailer, never seen anything like that before.  Couldn't possibly be on there when loading/unloading, you would think the drive would hit it.

That seems plausible, I suppose given that info, it would now seem to make more sense why only 40hp.   Probably get taxed by the CC/CI on their engines?   Must be tough to own a 23 jet with a 460 there if that's the case.

Aaron posted it few years back ... Took a bit to find it.
It was for sale in Europe, which is why it had odd trailer extension.

There's a CV19 I/O that comes up for sale in New York, year after year ...
Will post when it on Craigslist again ...

From my understanding the trailers over there all have to have brakes and the trailer has to extend back past the furthest point of the boat to the trailer gets hit and not the boat. Basically Trailer has to be longer then what its hauling.

If you look up towing limits on the cars over there they are all higher than the US. But all trailers have breaks as well.
I think this has become an addiction.

When I was stationed in Germany, our cars had to pass thorough inspection, but not as rigorous as the TUV.  I can't seem to remember boat trailers having extensions, but honestly don't remember seeing many boats for that matter.  I was close to the Mosel, but most boats I saw were large river cruisers.

Hmmm 40hp might not even get these boats on plan!!

As far as the trailer, I add that to my toons trailer for a better place to add brake lights and incase I ever get in a accident would save the outdrive and transom. Of course shortly after I added it we bought a cabin and the trailer is lucky to see 5 miles a yr.

The boat is nice but there is a lot of blems when you get up close, metal flake is all cracked and really needs to be stripped/sanded and recoated. Interior is in decent shape but not perfect by anymeans.

I just like the look of these hauls and think an Outboard would be sweet. Will see what the next few yrs bring as any day I will have another mouth to feed and my garage time will be limted!!!
