uh oh, motor noise - I have replacement motor questions...
« on: July 25, 2025, 12:56:03 PM »
Hi,
I need the collective's expertise here, been using my CVZ-18 and enjoying it with the family.
The sbc 350 4 bolt main block, rods, oil pump, and pistons are what remained of the engine it came with that was a fairly fresh rebuild. But it had been poorly stored, and if long blocks weren't so expensive (and such a roll of the dice), I would have retired it.
The decks had some pitting, and there was some borderline scoring in cylinders otherwise have fresh cross-hatching. Compression was very good, so I ordered new everything else, including rings, bought some used heads, and went for it.
Just when I thought I was winning, it developed more of a pinging sound than a knock, and after pulling the valve covers and the sparkplugs, I could recreate the sound while turning with a ratchet.
SOooo, I need at least a new rebuilt short block, but a long block, or fresh but used motor are all possible. What it has in it now, with all of the Mercruiser 898 external parts, is a casting number 14010207 80-85 4 bolt main
(Truly) in stock short blocks are hard to find, long blocks are easier, but which blocks/heads will take all of the engine accessories I have now?
I don't want another project, I want it back in the water, but don't mind mixing it up if there is a solution and I know what to do.
Now that we are going that way, what about a Vortec long block?
I know I will need a new manifold, and I believe my center rise exhaust manifolds will fit, but what about distributor, front motor accessories (power steering, alternator)? Motor mounts? All of the Mercruiser stuff that hangs on the back of the motor?

I changed over to a vortec block from a earlier style. A few things to keep in mind. Number one is the fuel pump. Some have the fuel pump mounting boss, some do not. Mine did but it was NOT drilled out for the pump push rod. There is a specialized tool made to drill that hole but i think is was pretty expensive so I went with an electric pump, which then required a relay setup to kill the pump when there is a lack on oil pressure. Not terrible to modify but if you're looking to just swap, that is strike one. I think I also had issues with the bellhousing fitment or maybe it was the coupler, I can't remember.

On to you're pinging. Is the noise up top or down low? I had an issue right after I got mine together. It ended up being an exhaust leak at the head to manifold connection. I simply didn't tighten it up enough.

Thanks for your response,
The noise is coming from the bottom end. I have the valve covers off and the plugs out, and I can recreate the noise turning with a rachet.
My best guess right now is that I stretched a rod bolt (which I reused).
The vortec was just a thought if I found a good motor at a reasonable price, but I really just want to just get it done simply and get it done and back in the water - our boating season often includes most or all of October, so there is plenty left!
This morning I am going to call "Marine Reman Engines" in Florida (they only do marine engines and have a 100% score on eBay), to get a price and lead time on a short block.

Is there a windage tray or oil scraper in the oil pan that a rod bolt could be making contact with? Did this noise start right away or was there a period of time where it sounded fine? If you think it is a rod bolt you may just need to clearance the block a bit to clear it.

Thanks for the response,
good thinking but no windage tray and stock stroke with rods that were already in this motor. I'll find out what it is but I bought a new long block anyway (with a worthless tracking number and no response yet from Summit).
If it turns out to be fixable, I'll sell that motor....
