transom thickness
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:49:32 PM »
Starting to figure out my materials list for stringers and transom rebuild on Phoenix Rising an have a question on transom thickness.
The good part of the transom that I removed is 1 5/8" thick. My question is if I build a transom 1 3/4" thick an 1/8" thicker will that screw up anything?

You have to be careful not to make it too thick or splashwell won't sit back far enough to seat the top back on, the rear edges won't meet up. The engine bolting surface of the splashwell has to sit solid and flush against the transom wood so the engine mounting bolts don't squeeze and deform the fiberglass.

My bad, for some reason I thought this was an outboard boat we were talking about, but it's not, right?

In that case - A Mercruiser I/O transom should be no thicker than 2 inches in total thickness or you might not get the inner and outer transom assemblies to squeeze toghether. But I also think it should not be any thinner than 1 5/8ths inch. The transom in my V174 was 2 inches thick, and this included the outer fiberglass shell layer. I used 2 layers of 3/4ths marine ply laminated together with 2 layers of glass mat between them and one layer of mat between the wood and fiberglass shell.
