Winter Hybernation Coming to an End
« on: April 07, 2013, 05:19:01 PM »
Boat stayed dry and safe during the winter. Perhaps after the cool weather this coming week, the temperatures will soar and then it will be time to get the boat out and attack the list of things to get done. Grass was growing in Minnesota this time last year. My boat but not my garage.

Did you ever decide which route to go with your steering? Sometimes I think if we could boat all year round we just wouldn't enjoy it as much as we do when we can! ;D.....LOL  As they say  "less is more".

Going with the Teleflex rack and pinion no feed back system. The Teleflex Baystar hydraulic system would be smoother and have less feedback, but the negatives are the cost (hydraulic about $600-$700 vs. mechanical of about $270), and the mechanical is more troublefree over the long haul. Anyone getting the Teleflex Baystar hydraulic system should make sure they get the latest updates in components as the system is constantly being improved.

Going to remove the seats from the boat and determine the cable length and whatever is necessary to put it in. Also will check all the hardware from the cable end to the motor for tightness.

This is only one of nine things I hope to accomplish before the start of the boating season.

April 12, 2012 is the first anniversary of owning the CVX-16. I am a believer.

You'll be more than happy with the Teleflex NFB system. Same thing I put in my CVX16 as I know your aware of.

Thanks for asking Gregg. The items are:
Replace torn boot where steering cable exits the side of the boat in the splashwell area
    Test props - Raker 20, Raker 22, Lightspeed 22, SRX 23
Experiment with angle of trim tab
Possibly raise outboard from the number two hole to number three
Have two 6 gallon gas tanks in the back floor or back seat of the boat feeding the outboard, with one or two 5 gallon non
    spill filler tanks as backup
Mount handheld Garmin GPS in very readable location
Buff parts of boat - White Bear Boat works buffed the bow, sides and back may need more work
Replace rubber hoses inside the motor
Move tie down straps to transom

Hope the rope holding the canoe isn't as old as the canoe.  I used to store my boat in a similar garage and the rope dried out to a sunfish sailboat hanging above.  When it hit my boat, it cracked top of sidewall.  You might want to double up with your own rope next season.

Tom, thank you for the good advice of doubling up on the ropes holding the canoe in the rafters over the Glastron/Carlson. The garage and the canoe are not mine. The canoe is homemade out of wood and has not been used for years. Again, thanks for the keen observation.

I faced a similar problem with an aluminum fishing boat hung from the garage rafters above 2 cars in my Dad's garage.  He was thinking about it, and figured the boat has been tied up their for 30 years, using light cotton cord.  He wanted the cord replaced with light metal chain and S hooks, so we went to the hardware store, spent $5, and we all sleep better now.

I hang some things from the garage roof ceiling too. I only use chain and lag bolts. A lot cheaper then body work on cars or boats.

That is a beautiful canoe. Too bad it never sees the water anymore.

I forgot to mention, the garage I used to store my boat in belonged to an 89 year old woman who had a 79 Eldorado in the next bay of the 2 car garage (this was in 1998) with 7,400 miles on it. She never used it.  I was able to buy it from her for a cheap price.  After running it for 4 years the Cadillac dealer it came from and serviced it for me offered to buy it from me to keep in the showroom.  Loved the car, but couldn't say no to the offer.  Gotta love the deals that pop up.
