Transom Tie Down Straps
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:29:51 PM »
The boat came with two over the boat tie down straps that could scratch the metalflake finish. These transom tie downs make more sense. Name brand is BoatBuckle, 2 inches by four feet, 2,400 pounds capacity, one hook vinyl coated. $11.99 at Fleet Farm.

David I did the same thing with my CVX16 when I had it. I hated that single strap that went over the top of the boat that it came with.

I bought the ones that hook the same way but when you hook one end, you just pull what you need out, hook the other end and then ratchet tight. They are nice and neat, no extra strap to worry about. Auto Zone sells these coiled safety cables, no more dragging chains. They are covered in clear sheathing, again, nice and neat. when you unhook them, they just coil back up, very nice.

My current trailer had giant hooks on the chains ... a good bump was all that was needed to have them come unhooked.  I dragged one of them halfway to Red Wing before I went under an overpass and heard the echo.  I started using a plastic zip tie to keep the chains from slipping off.  The zip tie only needed to keep the chain from swinging to much, if they were ever needed for their intended purpose, the tie would break but the hook would be pulled tight and unable to fall off at that point.

The new trailer came with retractable cables.  I was impressed.  They get sucked right back into the trailer frame once you connect them.  And the hooks have a safety latch on them, too!

I could use some of those tie-downs.  I've been using a pair I had for my old motorcycle, they're too long to go straight down.  I have to go from the right tie down on the boat to the left catch on the trailer and criss-cross them behind the transom under that outboard.  Sometimes it's a pain, but it holds down and tight.

My new boat has the same tie down straps. I used to have the over the deck so hopefully I'll remember to unhook both of them when I launch!

I hate over the boat straps. 2 of my boats came with those and it was one of the first things to come off. I now have a couple of sets like these and I can move them from boat to boat however only 2 boats are usable  so...

Hang the drain plug from one of the hooks on your transom strap when trailering. After I started doing that, I never again forgot my drain plug.

Yeah hopefully, but we all miss that from time to time as well!

The DNR was giving out stickers at the boat show that are "warning yellow" that state,  "Do you have your plug in at launch, Did you check your trailer for invasive species, and Do you have have the plug out for trailering" or something along those lines.

Should be a good reminder!

Hanging the plug from the hooks on the transom strap is a great tip too!

I took the transom tie down straps to a shoe repair shop where they cut off 26" of strap and looped the end over and sewed it for $8. No more excess strap at the ends.

You can cut those nylon straps, and dip them in resin. Works great. I use them all the time.

When I cut nylon rope or strap I just take a propane soldering torch and melt it along the edge so it wont fray.

Looks good David.

I've saved several of those "over the boat" tie down straps in the garage, they come in handy for other jobs!  (Like a lifting sling for the engine hoist, etc..)

Yes, I was going to throw away the two over the boat straps, but will use them for the second support system to hold up the canoe over my boat next winter.

Yes they are good for other things. I saved mine too. They are good for strapping stuff in the back of the truck or on a trailer.
