CV16SS Transom Replacement

It's no shock that the original transom in my 72' CV16SS (Volvo Penta) needs to be replaced, but i thought i had a few years to go until i found the hollow area while upgrading the fuel lines and fuel filter. Has anyone replaced one of these without splitting the boat and without replacing the floor also? (the floor was done in 2011 before i owned it, so it's solid). i have enough experience with fiberglass but i have not yet done a transom in one of these boats

I replaced the transom in our 75 CV 16 V8, without splitting it, basically the top was glassed on, and I didn?t wanna mess with it. You will probably need to cut back the floor and the stringer to get it in in one piece, although I did replace the transom in our V249 in four pieces split horizontally with the seam offset, I think that could be done on the small boat as well. Both projects are here on the forum with pictures, I will try to find the links.

I was thinking of replacing it in two pieces, i figure i could do the lower 1/3rd separately so i do not have issues with clearance, while still having the majority as one piece, and would be able to leave the newer floor in tact. then i could get a small tool in to cut the transom away from the floor just far enough to replace and glass it all back together

i guess my memory is failing me, on the 249 i split the transom vertically, outer layer 3 pieces with center piece 4' wide, inner layer 3 pieces split in the center, so it really does not apply to your project.
but if i were doing it i would use a similar technique, outer layer split horizontally with the seam as high as possible, and inner layer with the seam lower, 6" or more offset in possible.
are you using marine ply or composite ?

Thanks for the info, I will be using marine ply. The Coosa is my preferred option but I have a few other things under way that I don't want to take the funds away from

Well once i got into it the transom was much worse than i anticipated, was really only "solid" where i was able to check it and much if that was due to some epoxy patches from a previous owner (I just got the boat in early September). I also uncovered how poorly the floor was done aswell so i will now be doing the transom, floor, and stringer.

I will continue with the cap on. Just like @thedeuceman s V8, its glassed over and is not a thread i feel the need to pull at

All the wood is now removed and grinding is starting. The previous owner did the floor up to the ski locker with AC-X plywood, once removed i found an additional layer of 1708 covering the stringer. At first, i was worried that it was also a repair for cracks on the chines but it was hardly wet down with resin (still cloth like in places) and once removed the chines look to be solid.

The stringer tabbing is broken about half way up so if i decide to pour the stringer, a mold will be needed.

I wrapped up this project in time to enjoy some of the New England boat season. Like any boat project, this one unraveled into more than i had anticipated. i'll be posting the photos over the next couple weeks, but here it is on the CT river a few weeks back
